 ‘Vocabulary’

  1. Crass (adj.)

Meaning: lacking sensitivity, refinement, or intelligence. (मूरख)

Synonyms: stupid, unrefined, clumsy

Antonyms: refined, intelligent, clever

Sentence: The crass questions all disabled people get asked.

  1. Skimpy (adj.)

Meaning: less plentiful than what is normal, necessary, or desirable (अल्प)

Synonyms: insufficient, lacking, poor

Antonyms: enough, rich, sufficient

Sentence: The information in the user’s manual for the microwave is skimpy and not particularly helpful

  1. Infirm (adj.)

Meaning: lacking bodily strength (कमजोर)

Synonyms: weak, disabled, debilitated

Antonyms: powerful, strong, mighty

Sentence: Her grandmother is elderly and infirm.

  1. Contiguous (adj.)

Meaning: having a border in common. (सन्निहित)

Synonyms: neighboring, adjoining, closest

Antonyms: separate, single, apart

Sentence: Connecticut and Massachusetts are contiguous states

  1. Staple (noun)

Meaning: the main or greater part of something as distinguished from its subordinate parts (मुख्य)

Synonyms: centre, main, focus

Antonyms: side, accessary, adjunct

Sentence: reading is the very staple of a person’s education

  1. Annul (verb)

Meaning: to put an end to by formal action (रद्द करना)

Synonyms: abolish, repeal, cancel

Antonyms: validate, approve, permit

Sentence: unfortunately, his arrogant attitude annuls the many generous favors he does for people

  1. Latitude (noun)

Meaning: the right to act or move freely (स्वतंत्रता)

Synonyms: freedom, authorization, authority

Antonyms: unauthorized, limitation, restriction

Sentence: Employees should have some latitude in organizing their work.

  1. Bluff (adj.)

Meaning: to cause to believe what is untrue (झांसा देना)

Synonyms: fool, trick, mislead

Antonyms: expose, reveal, unmask

Sentence: I bluffed the interviewer into believing that I could really speak French and thus would be the perfect person to serve in the newspaper’s Paris bureau

  1. Peremptory (adj.)

Meaning: forcing one’s compliance or participation by or as if by law (आदेशपूर्ण)

Synonyms: compulsory, mandatory, incumbent

Antonyms: voluntary, optional, elective

Sentence: a peremptory summons to appear before the committee

  1. confiscates (adj.)

Meaning: to take ownership or control of (something) by right of one’s authority (ज़ब्त करना)

Synonyms: attaches, seizes, expropriates

Antonyms: releases, hands over, delivers

Sentence: anything that might be used as a weapon will be confiscated by the security guardss.
