‘Vocabulary’
- Baneful (adj.)
Meaning: harmful or destructive. (अभिशप्त)
Synonyms: damaging, dangerous, deleterious
Antonyms: harmless, hurtless, innocent
Sentence: His baneful influence was feared by all.
- Imprudent (adj.)
Meaning: not showing care for the consequences of an action; rash. (ढीठ)
Synonyms: unwise, injudicious, incautious
Antonyms: advisable, discreet, prudent
Sentence: It would be imprudent to leave her winter coat behind.
- Menace (verb)
Meaning: threaten, especially in a malignant or hostile manner. (खतरा)
Synonyms: threaten, scare, imperil
Antonyms: guard, protect, save
Sentence: Africa’s elephants are still menaced by poaching.
- Furbish (verb)
Meaning: give a fresh look to (something old or shabby) (चमक लाना)
Synonyms: renovate, furnish, glitter
Antonyms: roughen, ruffle, scuff
Sentence: I needed until August to fully furbish the two front rooms.
- Altruism (noun)
Meaning: the belief in or practice of disinterested and selfless concern for the well-being of others. (दूसरों का उपकार करने का सिद्धान्त)
Synonyms: unselfishness, selflessness, self-sacrifice
Antonyms: harshness, greed, selfishness
Sentence: Some may choose to work with vulnerable elderly people out of altruism.
- Compel (verb)
Meaning: force or oblige (someone) to do something. (मजबूर)
Synonyms: force, coerce into, pressurize into
Antonyms: allow, let, permit
Sentence: The law will compel employers to provide health insurance.
- Irate (adj.)
Meaning: feeling or characterized by great anger. (क्रुद्ध)
Synonyms: angry, furious, infuriated
Antonyms: calm, delighted, pleased
Sentence: We have received some irate phone calls from customers.
- Propensity (noun)
Meaning: an inclination or natural tendency to behave in a particular way. (प्रवृत्ति)
Synonyms: tendency, ability, inclination
Antonyms: disinclination, dislike, inability
Sentence: Men have a slightly increased propensity towards baldness.
- Subservient (adj.)
Meaning: prepared to obey others unquestioningly. (अधीन)
Synonyms: submissive, deferential, acquiescent
Antonyms: disrespectful, impolite, impudent
Sentence: She was subservient to her parents.
- Abeyance (noun)
Meaning: a state of temporary disuse or suspension. (ठहराव)
Synonyms: suspension, remission, a state of dormancy
Antonyms: continuance, continuation
Sentence: Matters were held in abeyance pending further inquiries.
