The Hindu Editorial VOCAB: 15th June 2021

‘Vocabulary’

  1. Extremism (noun)

Meaning: the holding of extreme political or religious views (अतिवाद)

Synonyms: fanaticism, radicalism, zealotry

Antonyms: moderateness, moderation, temperance

Sentence: The council was often accused of extremism.

  1. Lingering (adj.)

Meaning: lasting for a long time or slow to end (लंबे समय तक चलने वाला)

Synonyms: remaining, surviving, persisting

Antonyms: abating, ebbing, letting up

Sentence: There are still some lingering doubts in my mind.

  1. Repercussions (noun)

Meaning: an unintended consequence occurring some time after an event or action, especially an unwelcome one (नतीजों)

Synonyms: result, outcome, effect

Antonyms: impotences, causation

Sentence: What repercussions will the war have on the economy?

  1. Plummeting (verb)

Meaning: fall or drop straight down at high speed (नीचे गिरना या गिरना)

Synonyms: fall headlong, dive, drop

Antonyms: lifting, mounting, rising

Sentence: A climber was killed when he plummeted 300 feet down an icy gully

  1. Revamp (verb)

Meaning: give new and improved form, structure, or appearance to (सुधार)

Synonyms: renovate, redecorate, refurbish

Antonyms: fix, freeze, stabilize

Sentence: He decided to revamp the company’s provincial image.

  1. Myriad (adj.)

Meaning: countless or extremely great in number (असंख्य)

Synonyms: countless, infinite, unlimited

Antonyms: finite, limited, countable

Sentence: Designs are available in a myriad of colours.

  1. Substantial (adj.)

Meaning: of considerable importance, size, or worth (ठोस/ पर्याप्त)

Synonyms: weighty, solid, sizeable

Antonyms: worthless, anonymous, negligible

Sentence: The check was for a substantial amount.

  1. Dispel (verb)

Meaning: make (a doubt, feeling, or belief) disappear (दूर करना)

Synonyms: banish, eliminate, dismiss

Antonyms: assemble, congregate, gather

Sentence: The only way we are going to dispel ignorance is through education.

  1. Misgivings (noun)

Meaning: a feeling of doubt or apprehension about the outcome or consequences of something (गलतफहमी)

Synonyms: qualm, doubt, suspicion

Antonyms: assurances, beliefs, trusts

Sentence: We have misgivings about the way the campaign is being run

  1. Pedagogy (noun)

Meaning: the method and practice of teaching, especially as an academic subject or theoretical concept (शिक्षा शास्त्र)

Synonyms: education, instruction, tutoring

Sentence: Much of today’s mathematical pedagogy is derived from historical antecedents.
