 ‘Vocabulary’

  1. Awhile (adv.)

Meaning: for a short time. (कुछ समय)

Synonyms: for a moment, for a while, for a bit

Antonyms: endless, unending

Sentence: Stay awhile and rest.

  1. Festoon (verb)

Meaning: adorn (a place) with ribbons, garlands, or other decorations. (सजाना)

Synonyms: decorate, adorn, embellish

Antonyms: disfigure, spoil

Sentence: The hall was festooned with Christmas lights and holly.

  1. Intransigent (adj.)

Meaning: unwilling or refusing to change one’s views or to agree about something. (सैद्धांतिक)

Synonyms: uncompromising, inflexible, unbending

Antonyms: acquiescent, amenable, agreeable

Sentence: He has remained intransigent, refusing all suggestions for improvement of the process.

  1. Vestibule (noun)

Meaning: an antechamber, hall, or lobby next to the outer door of a building. (दालान)

Synonyms: hallway, entrance hall, lobby

  1. Indelible (adj.)

Meaning: (of ink or a pen) making marks that cannot be removed. (अमिट)

Synonyms: ineradicable, inerasable, ineffaceable

Antonyms: eradicate, expunge, efface

Sentence: The blood had left an indelible mark on her shirt.

  1. Adeptness (adj.)

Meaning: subtle or imaginative ability in inventing, devising, or executing something (निपुणता)

Synonyms: skillfulness, adroitness, proficiency

Antonyms: ineptitude, ineptness, artlessness

Sentence: His adeptness at thinking on his feet makes him a formidable debater.

  1. Vacillate (verb)

Meaning: to show uncertainty about the right course of action (संदेह करना)

Synonyms: hesitate, falter, waver

Antonyms: decide

Sentence: We cannot vacillate on the question of the party’s leadership.

  1. Cumber (noun)

Meaning: as in burden (बोझ)

Synonyms: burden, hindrance, obstruction

Antonyms: incentive, impetus

Sentence: His heavy boots cumbered him in walking.

  1. Chasten (verb)

Meaning: to inflict a penalty on for a fault or crime (दंड देना)

Synonyms: punish, chastise, penalize

Antonyms: spare, excuse, pardon

Sentence: He has been chastened by all kinds of experiences in life.

  1. Satire (noun)

Meaning: the use of humor, irony, exaggeration, or ridicule to expose and criticize people’s stupidity or vices, particularly in the context of contemporary politics and other topical issues. (हास्य व्यंग्य)

Synonyms: mockery, ridicule, derision

Sentence: The novel is a stinging satire on politics.
