The Hindu Editorial VOCAB:  17th December 2021

 ‘Vocabulary’

  1. Contrivance (noun)

Meaning: the use of skill to bring something about or create something. (युक्ति)

Synonyms: scheme, stratagem, tactic

Sentence: He erected some contrivance for storing rain water.

  1. Subsume (verb)

Meaning: include or absorb (something) in something else. (किसी नियम के अंतर्गत करना)

Synonyms: comprehend, contain, embrace

Antonyms: exclude, leave (out), miss out

Sentence: States subsume many of the responsibilities of governing from the county.

  1. Sapience (noun)

Meaning: the ability to understand inner qualities or relationships (बुद्धिमत्ता)

Synonyms: discernment, insight, perception

Antonyms: foolishness, idiocy, imbecility

Sentence: The kind of sapience that comes from a lifetime of experience as an educator.

  1. Stifled (verb)

Meaning: make (someone) unable to breathe properly; suffocate. (दबाया)

Synonyms: suffocate, choke, asphyxiate

  1. Unnerve (verb)

Meaning: make (someone) lose courage or confidence. (हतोत्साहित करना)

  1. Harbinger (noun)

Meaning: a person or thing that announces or signals the approach of another. (अग्र-दूत)

  1. Incorporeal (adj.)

Meaning: not composed of matter; having no material existence. (निराकार)

Synonyms: intangible, impalpable, nonmaterial

  1. Pondering (verb)

Meaning: think about (something) carefully, especially before making a decision or reaching a conclusion. (विचार करना)

  1. Perplex (verb)

Meaning: (of something complicated or unaccountable) cause (someone) to feel completely baffled. (हक्का-बक्का करना)

Antonyms: simplify, streamline

Sentence: The disease has continued to perplex doctors.

  1. Diaphanous (adj.)

Meaning: (especially of fabric) light, delicate, and translucent. (पारदर्शक)

Synonyms: sheer, fine, ultra-fine

Antonyms: opaque, cloudy, foggy

Sentence: The little light fades the immense and diaphanous shadows.
