‘Vocabulary’
- Clinch (verb)
Meaning: confirm or settle (a contract or bargain). (पुष्टि करना)
Synonyms: decide, settle, assure
Antonyms: confuse, unsettle
Sentence: The rain clinched the matter, we would have the party indoors.
- Jovial (adj.)
Meaning: cheerful and friendly. (उल्लासपूर्ण)
Synonyms: cheerful, jolly, happy
Antonyms: glum, melancholy, sad
Sentence: The trip to the amusement park put everyone in a jovial mood.
- Terse (adj.)
Meaning: marked by the use of few words to convey much information or meaning (संक्षिप्त)
Synonyms: concise, brief, summary
Antonyms: verbose, prolix, wordy
Sentence: Derek’s terse reply ended the conversation.
- Penchant (noun)
Meaning: a habitual attraction to some activity or thing (लगन)
Synonyms: tendency, aptitude, inclination
Antonyms: aversion, distaste, dislike
Sentence: She has a penchant for Indian food.
- Dotard (noun)
Meaning: an old person, especially one who has become physically weak or whose mental faculties have declined. (बूढ़ा)
Synonyms: geriatric, oldster, senior citizen
Antonyms: youth, youngster, adolescent
Sentence: You are a real dotard to have forgotten it so easily.
- Animadversion (noun)
Meaning: criticism or censure. (निन्दा)
Synonyms: critique, reprimand, condemnation
Antonyms: commendation, endorsement
Sentence: Their animadversion is caused by the deep pain, disappointment, and sorrow of western civilization.
- Devout (adj.)
Meaning: having or showing deep religious feeling or commitment. (धार्मिक)
Synonyms: religious, reverent, holy
Antonyms: faithless, godless, impious
Sentence: Louis became an extremely devout and ascetic man.
- Apportionment (noun)
Meaning: the action or result of apportioning something. (विभाजन)
Synonyms: redistribution, division, reallocation
Sentence: Apportionment of seats in the House of Representatives and state legislatures is based on census data.
- Propounded (verb)
Meaning: put forward (an idea, theory, or point of view) for consideration by others. (प्रतिपादन करना)
Synonyms: put forward, proposed, suggested
Sentence: The theory of natural selection was first propounded by Charles Darwin.
- Macabre (adj.)
Meaning: disturbing and horrifying because of involvement with or depiction of death and injury. (भयंकर)
Synonyms: gruesome, grisly, ghastly
Antonyms: delightful, pleasant, appealing
Sentence: Even the police were horrified at the macabre nature of the killings.
