‘Vocabulary’
- Sycophancy (noun)
Meaning: obsequious behavior toward someone important in order to gain advantage. (हाँ में हाँ मिलाना)
Synonyms: fawning, flattery, obsequiousness
Antonyms: bad-mouthing, belittlement
Sentence: Sycophancy was the device of the least trustworthy.
- Disposition (noun)
Meaning: a person’s inherent qualities of mind and character. (स्वभाव)
Synonyms: nature, character, mentality
Sentence: Your sunny disposition has a way of rubbing off on those around you.
- Deterring (verb)
Meaning: discourage (someone) from doing something by instilling doubt or fear of the consequences. (डराकर रोकना)
Synonyms: discourage, dissuade, scare off
Antonyms: encouraging, persuading
Sentence: High prices are deterring many young people from buying houses.
- Demean (verb)
Meaning: cause a severe loss in the dignity of and respect for (someone or something) (नीचा दिखाना)
Synonyms: shaming, debase, degrade
Antonyms: uplift, ennoble, elevate
Sentence: Don’t demean yourself by telling such obvious lies.
- Haywire (adj.)
Meaning: erratic; out of control. (उत्तेजित)
Synonyms: out of order, erratic, faulty
Antonyms: in order, under control
Sentence: After that, things started to go haywire.
- Dovetailing (verb)
Meaning: to be in agreement on every point (सहमत होना)
Synonyms: according, agreeing
Antonyms: differing, disagreeing
Sentence: The Union and the Confederate accounts of the battle don’t dovetail at all.
- Temerity (noun)
Meaning: excessive confidence or boldness; audacity. (उतावलापन)
Synonyms: audacity, boldness, audaciousness
Antonyms: bashfulness, diffidence, hesitancy
Sentence: He had the temerity to ask for higher wages after only a day’s work.
- Indubitable (adj.)
Meaning: impossible to doubt; unquestionable. (ज़ाहिर)
Synonyms: unquestionable, undoubtedly, indisputable
Antonyms: doubtful, dubious, iffy
Sentence: The indubitable evidence we produced bore down our opponents in the debate.
- Unwittingly (adv.)
Meaning: without being aware; unintentionally. (बेइरादा)
Synonyms: accidentally, fortuitously, inadvertently,
Antonyms: meticulously, orderly, intentionally
Sentence: If I offended you it was unwittingly.
- Estrangement (noun)
Meaning: the fact of no longer being on friendly terms or part of a social group. (मनमुटाव)
Synonyms: antipathy, disaffection, hostility
Antonyms: reconcilement, reconciliation
Sentence: They finally came together after years of estrangement.
