‘Vocabulary’
- Promptitude (noun)
Meaning: the quality of acting quickly and without delay (मुस्तैदी)
Synonyms: speediness, rapidness, promptness
Antonyms: delay, hindrance, rest
Sentence: Their own promptitude in retreating at the critical moment saved them.
- Plausible (adj.)
Meaning: (of an argument or statement) seeming reasonable or probable (प्रशंसनीय)
Synonyms: conceivable, credible, likely
Antonyms: unlikely, improbable, inconceivable
Sentence: He was so plausible that he conned everybody.
- Demean (verb)
Meaning: cause a severe loss in the dignity of and respect for (someone or something) (नीचा दिखाना)
Synonyms: shaming, debase, degrade
Antonyms: uplift, ennoble, elevate
Sentence: Don’t demean yourself by telling such obvious lies.
- Encroaching (verb)
Meaning: intrude on (a person’s territory or a thing considered to be a right) (अतिक्रमण)
Synonyms: trespass, impinge, infringe
Antonyms: ignore, keep off
Sentence: The sea is encroaching upon the land.
- Cognizance (noun)
Meaning: knowledge, awareness, or notice (ध्यान में रखते)
Synonyms: awareness, notice, attention
Antonyms: disregard, heedlessness, ignorance
Sentence: Any cognizance about a crime should be reported to the police.
- Suave (adj.)
Meaning: charming, confident, and elegant (typically used of a man) (शिष्ट)
Synonyms: charming, sophisticated, debonair
Antonyms: unsophisticated, rude, impolite
Sentence: He is a suave, cool, and cultured man.
- Prevalence (noun)
Meaning: the fact or condition of being prevalent; commonness (प्रसार)
Synonyms: pervasiveness, generality, commonness
Antonyms: Infrequence, uncommonness, rareness
Sentence: They were very surprised by the prevalence of anti-government sentiments.
- Cartridge (noun)
Meaning: a container holding a spool of photographic film, a quantity of ink, or other item or substance, designed for insertion into a mechanism (कारतूस)
Synonyms: bullet, cassette, cylinder
Sentence: This rifle only holds one cartridge.
- Usurp (verb)
Meaning: take (a position of power or importance) illegally or by force (हड़पना)
Synonyms: seize, take, steal
Antonyms: give, leave, let go
Sentence: The vice–president is trying to usurp the president’s authority.
- Shrewd (adj.)
Meaning: having or showing sharp powers of judgment (चालाक)
Synonyms: acute, intelligent, astute
Antonyms: stupid, unwise, ingenuous
Sentence: He’s too shrewd to be trusted in business matters.
