The Hindu Editorial VOCAB:  20th March 2023

 ‘Vocabulary’

  1. Haven (noun)

Meaning: a place of safety or refuge. (शरण)

Synonyms: refuge, shelter, sanctuary

Sentence: The river banks are a haven for wildlife.

  1. Renege (verb)

Meaning: go back on a promise, undertaking, or contract. (इनकार)

Synonyms: withdraw, recall, retract

Antonyms: fulfil, keep

Sentence: If you renege on the deal now, I’ll fight you in the courts.

  1. Stench (noun)

Meaning: a strong and very unpleasant smell. (बदबू)

Synonyms: stink, bad smell, foul smell

Antonyms: fragrance, aroma, sweetness

Sentence: The air was filled with the overpowering stench of decomposing vegetation.

  1. Congenial (adj.)

Meaning: (of a person) pleasant because of a personality, qualities, or interests that are similar to one’s own. (अनुकूल)

Synonyms: pleasant, delightful, enjoyable

Antonyms: disagreeable, unpleasant, miserable

Sentence: The department provides a congenial atmosphere for research.

  1. Fiddling (adj.)

Meaning: of little value or importance. (निरर्थक)

Synonyms: little, minor, trivial

Antonyms: significant, important, major

Sentence: You should delegate these fiddling matters to your staff so that you can focus on more important issues.

  1. Skewed (verb)

Meaning: suddenly change direction or position. (तिरछा करना)

Synonyms: tilted, uneven, crooked

Antonyms: straight, level, uniform

Sentence: The picture on the wall was slightly skewed.

  1. Shirker (noun)

Meaning: one who deliberately avoids work or duty (कामचोर)

Synonyms: idler, lingerer, sluggard

Antonyms: doer, hustler

Meaning: make (a difficult or esoteric subject) clearer and easier to understand. (स्पष्ट करना)

Synonyms: explain, clarify, illustrate

Antonyms: obscure, confuse, confound

Sentence: This book aims to demystify medical treatments.

  1. Veracious (adj.)

Meaning: speaking or representing the truth. (सत्यनिष्ठ)

Synonyms: honest, truthful, genuine

Antonyms: mendacious, dishonest, untruthful

Sentence: He was a strictly veracious reporter.

  1. Receptive (adj.)

Meaning: willing to consider or accept new suggestions and ideas. (ग्रहणशील)

Synonyms: open-minded, broad-minded, impartial

Antonyms: unreceptive, partial

Sentence: The voters had seemed receptive to his ideas.
