The Hindu Editorial VOCAB:  21st March 2023

 ‘Vocabulary’

  1. Acquit (verb)

Meaning: free (someone) from a criminal charge by a verdict of not guilty. (बरी करना)

Synonyms: absolve, clear, exonerate

Antonyms: incriminate, indict, convict

Sentence: He has never failed to acquit a client charged with murder.

  1. Appropriacy (noun)

Meaning: the quality of being suitable or proper in the circumstances. (उपयुक्तता)

Synonyms: suitable, proper, acceptable

Antonyms: inappropriate, improper, unsuitable

Sentence: Teachers aim to assess the appropriacy of the language used by their students in particular contexts.

  1. Mercenary (adj.)

Meaning: having or marked by an eager and often selfish desire especially for material possessions (लालच)

Synonyms: greedy, avaricious, acquisitive

Antonyms: altruistic, charitable, liberal

Sentence: She’s interested in him for purely mercenary reasons.

  1. Conform (verb)

Meaning: comply with rules, standards, or laws. (अनुरूप)

Synonyms: comply with, abide by, obey

Antonyms: disagree, differ (from)

Sentence: All students must conform to the rules.

  1. Consternation (noun)

Meaning: feelings of anxiety or dismay, typically at something unexpected. (चिंता)

Synonyms: dismay, perturbation, anxiety

Antonyms: comfort, consolation, relief

Sentence: The announcement created surprise and consternation.

  1. Flitting (verb)

Meaning: to make an irregular series of quick, sudden movements (झटपट चल पड़ना)

Synonyms: darting, fluttering, wandering

Sentence: Bargain hunters at the flea market flitted from table to table like hummingbirds in a garden.

  1. Voicing (verb)

Meaning: to make known (as an idea, emotion, or opinion) (व्यक्त करना)

Synonyms: expressing, stating, announcing

Antonyms: suppressing, restricting

Sentence: They had no inhibitions about voicing their feelings.

  1. Resounding (adj.)

Meaning: experiencing pleasure, satisfaction, or delight (शानदार)

Synonyms: enormous, delighted, joyful

Antonyms: sad, unhappy, joyless

Sentence: The astronaut was welcomed with joyous, resounding acclaim.

  1. Heft (adj.)

Meaning: large, heavy, and powerful. (बलवान)

Synonyms: burly, heavy, sturdy

Antonyms: weakness, helplessness, impotence

Sentence: Some synthetic fabrics are nice and warm, but I prefer wool because it has more heft.

  1. Comport (verb)

Meaning: accord with; agree with. (सहमत होना)

Synonyms: correspond, conform, coincide

Antonyms: contradict, differ (from), disagree (with)

Sentence: His statement did not comport with the facts.
