‘Vocabulary’
- Feud (verb)
Meaning: take part in a prolonged quarrel or conflict. (झगड़ा)
Synonyms: quarrel, fight, argue
Antonyms: friendliness, sympathy, congeniality
Sentence: Because of a family feud, he never spoke to his wife’s parents for years.
- Sluggard (noun)
Meaning: a lazy, sluggish person. (आलसी)
Synonyms: layabout, lazybones, deadbeat
Antonyms: assiduous, diligent, hardworking
Sentence: I’m waiting for those sluggards to bring my steak
- Smoldered (verb)
Meaning: burn slowly with smoke but no flame. (सुलगना)
Synonyms: burn slowly, blazed, glow
Antonyms: extinguished, darkened, dimmed
Sentence: The bonfire still smoldered, the smoke drifting over the paddock.
- Gimmick (noun)
Meaning: a trick or device intended to attract attention, publicity, or business. (नौटंकी)
Synonyms: publicity device, stunt, trick
Sentence: That free dinner is just a sales gimmick to get you to listen to their sales pitch.
- Benign (adj.)
Meaning: gentle and kindly. (सौम्य)
Synonyms: kind, warm-hearted, good-natured
Antonyms: coarse, hard, harsh
Sentence: The medicine is benign in its effects and will cause you no harm.
- Skeptic (noun)
Meaning: a person inclined to question or doubt accepted opinions. (संदेहवादी)
Synonyms: cynic, doubter, questioner
Antonyms: chump, dupe, gull
Sentence: Being a skeptic, the woman highly doubted that the psychic would really be able to tell her future.
- Brink (noun)
Meaning: an extreme edge of land before a steep or vertical slope. (तट)
Synonyms: edge, verge, margin
Sentence: The tree grew on the brink of the cliff.
- Surfeit (noun)
Meaning: an excessive amount of something. (अतिरेक)
Synonyms: excess, surplus, abundance
Antonyms: deficiency, deficit, insufficiency
Sentence: A surfeit of rich food is bad for you.
- Complacency (noun)
Meaning: a feeling of smug or uncritical satisfaction with oneself or one’s achievements. (शालीनता)
Synonyms: smugness, self-satisfaction, self-approval
Antonyms: diffidence, self-doubt, self-disgust
Sentence: The figures are better, but there are no grounds for complacency.
- Perforate (verb)
Meaning: pierce and make a hole or holes in. (छिद्रित)
Synonyms: pierce, penetrate, prick
Antonyms: fill, patch, seal
Sentence: The broken ribs perforated into his lung.
