The Hindu Editorial VOCAB:  27th February 2023

 ‘Vocabulary’

  1. Ennobled (verb)

Meaning: give (someone) a noble rank or title. (सम्मानित किए)

Synonyms: exalted, glorified, magnanimous

Antonyms: debased, degraded, ignoble

Sentence: I was frankly astonished when this gentleman was ennobled.

  1. Nitty-Gritty (adj.)

Meaning: having to do with the practical details of regular life (दैनिक)

Synonyms: everyday, mundane, prosaic

Antonyms: rare, singular, uncommon

Sentence: A look at the nitty-gritty aspects of putting out a newspaper.

  1. Daze (verb)

Meaning: make (someone) unable to think or react properly; stupefy; bewilder. (मति-मंद करना)

Synonyms: stun, stupefy, dumbfound

Sentence: The fall daze him for a moment, causing him to become disoriented.

  1. Inquiringly (adv.)

Meaning: to search through or into (जाँचते)

Synonyms: examine, inspect, study

Sentence: Victor looked at her inquiringly.

  1. Mushy (adj.)

Meaning: excessively sentimental. (भावुक)

Synonyms: sentimental, mawkish, emotional

Antonyms: unsentimental, hard-edged

Sentence: Don’t go getting all mushy and sentimental.

  1. Scrawled (verb)

Meaning: write (something) in a hurried, careless way. (घसीटकर लिखना)

Synonyms: scribble, write hurriedly, write untidily

Sentence: Someone had scrawled all over my notes.

  1. Ingress (noun)

Meaning: the action or fact of going in or entering. (प्रवेश)

Synonyms: entry, entrance, access

Antonyms: discharge, dismissal

Sentence: With limited ingress and egress to the freeway, the stadium is a frequent scene of bottlenecks.

  1. Retribution (noun)

Meaning: punishment inflicted on someone as vengeance for a wrong or criminal act. (प्रतिदण्ड)

Synonyms: punishment, penalty, nemesis

Antonyms: clemency, grace, leniency

Sentence: They fled because they feared retribution for the genocide.

  1. Flimsy (adj.)

Meaning: comparatively light and insubstantial; easily damaged. (कमज़ोर)

Synonyms: insubstantial, slight, light

Antonyms: sturdy, substantial

Sentence: The storm flattened the flimsy wooden huts that the villagers lived in.

  1. Pandemonium (noun)

Meaning: wild and noisy disorder or confusion; uproar. (विप्लव)

Synonyms: bedlam, chaos, mayhem

Antonyms: calm, hush, peace

Sentence: There was pandemonium when the news was announced.
