The Hindu Editorial VOCAB:  27th July 2022

 ‘Vocabulary’

  1. Conduces (verb)

Meaning: help to bring about (a particular situation or outcome). (उत्पन्न करता है)

Synonyms: creates, bring about, contributes (to)

Sentence: A good diet conduces to good health.

  1. Fluke (noun)

Meaning: an unlikely chance occurrence, especially a surprising piece of luck. (संयोग से)

Synonyms: chance, coincidence, accident

Sentence: We won the football game by a fluke.

  1. Esoteric (adj.)

Meaning: intended for or likely to be understood by only a small number of people with specialized knowledge or interest. (गुप्त)

Synonyms: abstruse, obscure, arcane

Antonyms: common, open, public

Sentence: He has an esoteric collection of old toys and games.

  1. Weasel (adj.)

Meaning: a deceitful or treacherous person. (चालक आदमी)

Synonyms: scoundrel, wretch, serpent

Antonyms: innocent, saint

Sentence: He was a double-crossing weasel.

  1. Smidgen (noun)

Meaning: a small amount of something. (थोड़ा)

Synonyms: ace, bit, driblet

Antonyms: abundance, barrel, boatload

Sentence: Could I have a smidgen more wine?

  1. Suffuse (verb)

Meaning: gradually spread through or over. (फैलाना)

Synonyms: permeate, spread over, spread throughout

Sentence: The living room was suffused with warm sunlight.

  1. Poltroonery (noun)

Meaning: a shameful lack of courage in the face of danger (कायरता)

Synonyms: cowardice, cowardliness, cravenness

Antonyms: bravery, courage, daring

Sentence: He was disgraced with Poltroonery.

  1. Expounded (verb)

Meaning: present and explain (a theory or idea) systematically and in detail. (प्रस्तुत)

Synonyms: present, put forward, proffer

Sentence: He was expounding a powerful argument.

  1. Oppugn (verb)

Meaning: call into question the truth or validity of. (आपत्ति करना)

Synonyms: challenge, contest, dispute

Antonyms: accept, believe, embrace

Sentence: This paper aims to oppugn and criticize the above ideas.

  1. Succinctly (adv.)

Meaning: in a brief and clearly expressed manner. (संक्षेप)

Synonyms: briefly, compactly, concisely

Antonyms: diffusely, long-windedly, verbosely

Sentence: He succinctly summed up his manifesto as “Work hard, train hard and play hard”.
