‘Vocabulary’
- Precept (noun)
Meaning: a general rule intended to regulate behavior or thought. (नियम)
Synonyms: principle, rule, tenet
Sentence: You won’t find this moral precept in the scriptures.
- Astounding (adj.)
Meaning: surprisingly impressive or notable. (अद्भुत)
Synonyms: amazing, astonishing, staggering
Antonyms: unimpressive, boring, dull
Sentence: There was an astounding 20% increase in sales.
- Salvage (noun)
Meaning: the rescue of a wrecked or disabled ship or its cargo from loss at sea. (उबार)
Synonyms: rescue, saving, recovery
Antonyms: sinking, endanger
Sentence: Salvage of the wreck was made difficult by bad weather.
- Lassitude (noun)
Meaning: a state of physical or mental weariness; lack of energy. (सुस्ती)
Synonyms: lethargy, listlessness, weariness
Antonyms: refreshment, rejuvenation
Sentence: She was overcome by lassitude and retired to bed.
- Culminate (verb)
Meaning: reach a climax or point of highest development. (समापन)
Synonyms: peak, climax, end with
Antonyms: start, begin
Sentence: He culminated the school year with a trip to New York.
- Imprudent (adj.)
Meaning: not showing care for the consequences of an action; rash. (ढीठ)
Synonyms: unwise, injudicious, incautious
Antonyms: advisable, discreet, prudent
Sentence: It would be imprudent to leave her winter coat behind.
- Falter (verb)
Meaning: start to lose strength or momentum. (लड़खड़ाना)
Synonyms: hesitate, delay, drag one’s feet
Antonyms: decide, budge, stir
Sentence: The economy is beginning to falter.
- Galore (adj.)
Meaning: in abundance. (बहुतायत)
Synonyms: aplenty, in abundance, in profusion
Antonyms: bare, minimal, scant
Sentence: There are book-shop galore in this town.
- Pertinent (adj.)
Meaning: relevant or applicable to a particular matter (उचित)
Synonyms: relevant, appropriate, apposite
Antonyms: irrelevant, pointless, inapposite
Sentence: He asked me a lot of very pertinent questions.
- Despondency (noun)
Meaning: a state of low spirits caused by loss of hope or courage. (निराशा)
Synonyms: disheartenment, discouragement, dispiritedness
Antonyms: encouragement, hope, hopefulness
Sentence: Life’s not all gloom and despondency.
