‘Vocabulary’

  1. Hedonistic (adj.)

Meaning: engaged in the pursuit of pleasure; sensually self-indulgent. (सुखवादी)

Synonyms: self-indulgent, indulgent, pleasure-seeking

Antonyms: self-abnegating, self-denying

Sentence: New York, a city known for its hedonistic nightlife

  1. Transmogrify (verb)

Meaning: transform in a surprising or magical manner. (परिणत हो जाना)

Synonyms: redesign, transfigure, transform

Sentence: The cucumbers were ultimately transmogrified into pickles.

  1. Jettison (verb)

Meaning: throw or drop (something) from an aircraft or ship. (बोझ गिराना)

Synonyms: discarding, disposal, dumping

Antonyms: accumulation, gathering

Sentence: Six aircraft jettisoned their loads in the sea.

  1. Populace (noun)

Meaning: the people living in a particular country or area. (आबादी)

Synonyms: population, inhabitants, residents

Sentence: Many of the city’s populace travel to work by subway or bus.

  1. Impish (adj.)

Meaning: inclined to do slightly naughty things for fun; mischievous. (शरारती)

Synonyms: mischievous, naughty, wicked

Antonyms: sedate, sober

Sentence: The group of impish children ran into the street, utterly oblivious to the traffic.

  1. Furtive (adj.)

Meaning: attempting to avoid notice or attention, typically because of guilt or a belief that discovery would lead to trouble; secretive. (गुप्त रूप से)

Synonyms: secretive, secret, surreptitious

Antonyms: public, overt, acknowledged

Sentence: The secretary looked almost furtive when I walked in.

  1. Avowal (noun)

Meaning: a solemn and often public declaration of the truth or existence of something (घोषणा-पत्र)

Synonyms: affirmation, assertion, asseveration

Antonyms: disavowal, denial

Sentence: The press carried his avowal throughout the country.

  1. Nonplussed (adj.)

Meaning: (of a person) surprised and confused so much that they are unsure how to react. (भौचक)

Synonyms: confused, bewildered, bemused

Antonyms: undaunted, unfazed

Sentence: I was completely nonplussed by his sudden appearance.

  1. Camaraderie (noun)

Meaning: mutual trust and friendship among people who spend a lot of time together. (भाई-चारा)

Synonyms: friendship, comradeship, fellowship

Antonyms: forlornness, loneliness, lonesomeness

Sentence: The camaraderie among fellow employees made the tedious work just bearable.

  1. Riposte (verb)

Meaning: make a quick, clever reply to an insult or criticism. (जवाबी हमल)

Synonyms: retort, counter, hurl back

Sentence: The US delivered an early riposte to the air attack.
