The Hindu Editorial VOCAB:  29th July 2025

 ‘Vocabulary’

  1. Repertoire (noun)

Meaning: a stock of plays, dances, or pieces that a company or a performer knows or is prepared to perform. (सूची)

Synonyms: collection, stock, store

Sentence: That tune is not in my repertoire.

  1. Malaise (noun)

Meaning: a general feeling of discomfort, illness, or uneasiness whose exact cause is difficult to identify. (अस्वस्थता)

Synonyms: uneasiness, anxiety, melancholy

Antonyms: calm, ease, placidness

Sentence: The malaise had spread countrywide however.

  1. Reticence (noun)

Meaning: the quality of being reticent; reserve. (अल्पभाषिता)

Synonyms: disinclination, hesitance, hesitancy

Antonyms: inclination, willingness

Sentence: His reticence is more revealing than his speech.

  1. Centrist (adj.)

Meaning: having moderate political views or policies. (मध्यमार्गी)

Synonyms: conventional, neutral

Antonyms: extremist, radical, revolutionary

Sentence: Several centrist candidates were elected, apparently in a reaction against the extremists.

  1. Fillip (noun)

Meaning: something which acts as a stimulus or boost to an activity. (प्रोत्साहन)

Synonyms: boost, encouragement, incitement

Sentence: The news gave the stock market a big fillip.

  1. Resurgence (noun)

Meaning: an increase or revival after a period of little activity, popularity, or occurrence. (पुनरुत्थान)

Synonyms: renewal, revival, recovery

Antonyms: expiration

Sentence: Police say drugs traffickers are behind the resurgence of violence.

  1. Extradite (verb)

Meaning: hand over (a person accused or convicted of a crime) to the jurisdiction of the foreign state in which the crime was committed. (अपराधी देना)

Synonyms: deport, hand over, send back

Sentence: The police have refused to extradite a man wanted for a bank robbery in France.

  1. Procrastination (noun)

Meaning: the action of delaying or postponing something. (टालमटोल)

Synonyms: dithering, delaying tactics, dilatoriness

Antonyms: alacrity, eagerness, readiness

Sentence: Procrastination is the thief of time.

  1. Annulment (noun)

Meaning: the act of annulling something. (रद्द करना)

Synonyms: invalidation, nullification, voiding

Antonyms: enactment, legislation, establishment

Sentence: Continued absence of one party may also justify annulment.

  1. Disavow (verb)

Meaning: deny any responsibility or support for. (अस्वीकृति)

Synonyms: deny, disclaim, disown

Antonyms: admit, allow, avow

Sentence: She tried to disavow her past.
