 ‘Vocabulary’

  1. Dour (adj.)

Meaning: relentlessly severe, stern, or gloomy in manner or appearance. (कठोर)

Synonyms: stern, unsmiling, unfriendly

Antonyms: benign, friendly, gentle

Sentence: No wonder he looked so dour.

  1. Rebuff (noun)

Meaning: an abrupt or ungracious refusal or rejection of an offer, request, or friendly gesture. (रोक)

Synonyms: rejection, snub, slight

Antonyms: acceptance, embrace, welcome

Sentence: He received a humiliating rebuff from his manager.

  1. Deft (adj.)

Meaning: accomplished with the trained ability (निपुण)

Synonyms: adroit, artful, dexterous

Antonyms: amateur, unprofessional, unskillful

Sentence: He’s very deft at handling awkward situations.

  1. Trepidation (noun)

Meaning: a feeling of fear or agitation about something that may happen. (घबराहट)

Synonyms: fear, apprehension, worry

Antonyms: boldness, confidence, courage

Sentence: Shaking with trepidation, I stepped into the old abandoned house.

  1. Vitriolic (adj.)

Meaning: filled with bitter criticism or malice. (कटु)

Synonyms: acrimonious, rancorous, bitter

Antonyms: encomiastic, respectful, praiseful

Sentence: The newspaper launched a vitriolic attack on the president.

  1. Cacophony (noun)

Meaning: a harsh discordant mixture of sounds. (कोलाहल)

Synonyms: noise, discord, dissonance

Antonyms: quiet, silence, hush

Sentence: All around was bubbling a cacophony of voices.

  1. Freebie (noun)

Meaning: a thing given free of charge. (मुफ्त)

Synonyms: bequest, favor, present

Antonyms: bribe, douceur

Sentence: The journalists were all given a freebie lunch.

  1. Rummage (verb)

Meaning: search unsystematically and untidily through a mass or receptacle. (चप्पा चप्पा छान मारना)

Synonyms: search (through), hunt through, scrabble around in

Antonyms: hide, neglect, lose

Sentence: He rummaged through the desk drawer trying to find the spare keys.

  1. Falter (verb)

Meaning: start to lose strength or momentum. (लड़खड़ाना)

Synonyms: hesitate, wobble, waver

Antonyms: dive (in), plunge (in)

Sentence: The nurse saw him falter and made him lean on her.

  1. Raillery (noun)

Meaning: good-humored teasing. (मज़ाक)

Synonyms: teasing, chaff, banter

Sentence: She was greeted with raillery from her fellow workers.
