The Hindu Editorial VOCAB:  29th October 2022

 ‘Vocabulary’

  1. Perdition (noun)

Meaning: (in Christian theology) a state of eternal punishment and damnation into which a sinful and unpenitent person passes after death. (विनाश)

Synonyms: damnation, destruction, downfall

Antonyms: bliss, paradise

Sentence: Simple stupidity is not enough to doom one to perdition.

  1. Foolhardy (adj.)

Meaning: recklessly bold or rash. (असावधान)

Synonyms: reckless, careless, incautious

Antonyms: careful, cautious, heedful

Sentence: It would be foolhardy to go into the scheme without support.

  1. Clutter (noun)

Meaning: an unorganized collection or mixture of various things (ढेरी)

Synonyms: agglomerate, agglomeration, mixed bag

Sentence: Sorry about the clutter in the kitchen

  1. Exculpate (verb)

Meaning: show or declare that (someone) is not guilty of wrongdoing. (निर्दोष सिद्ध करना)

Synonyms: absolve, acquit, clear

Antonyms: accuse, arraign

Sentence: He exculpates himself from stealing the money.

  1. Convene (verb)

Meaning: come or bring together for a meeting or activity; assemble. (आमन्त्रित करना)

Synonyms: assemble, call, convoke

Sentence: He had convened a secret meeting of military personnel.

  1. Supine (adj.)

Meaning: lacking the ability or will to act on one’s own (कमज़ोर)

Synonyms: weak, feeble, yielding

Antonyms: powerful, puissant, strong

Sentence: They blamed the disaster on supine politicians who allowed large corporations to flout regulations.

  1. Demarcate (verb)

Meaning: to mark the limits of (निर्धारित करना)

Synonyms: bound, circumscribe, delimit

Sentence: A bright yellow line demarcated the county on the road map.

  1. Moiety (noun)

Meaning: each of two parts into which a thing is or can be divided. (आधा भाग)

Synonyms: half, moiety, part

Antonyms: entirety, whole, full

Sentence: The tax was to be delivered in two moieties.

  1. Meekly (adv.)

Meaning: in a quiet, gentle, and submissive manner. (नर्मी से)

Synonyms: abjectly, deferentially, modestly

Antonyms: arrogantly, audaciously, boldly

Sentence: Most have meekly accepted such advice.

  1. Rummage (verb)

Meaning: search unsystematically and untidily through a mass or receptacle. (चप्पा चप्पा छान मारना)

Synonyms: search, explore

Antonyms: hide, abandon

Sentence: Have a rummage around in the drawer and see if you can find a pen.
