Vocabulary

1. Critique (Noun) – Trick: Critics + Question

Meaning: A piece of writing that describe the good & bad points of somebody/something (आलोचना)

Synonyms: Skewer, Tweak, Slam

Antonyms: Commend, Approve, Recommend

Sentence: The book presents a critique of the government’s policies.

2. Earmark (Noun) – Trick: Ear + Mark

Meaning: A distinctive Characteristics or attribute/ to keep for a special purpose (लक्षण)

Synonyms: Allocate, Dedicate, Devote

Antonyms: Ignore, Neglect, Misuse

Sentence: The earnings from my second job have been earmarked for a down payment on a car.

3. Devolution (Noun) – Trick: De (decrease) + Value

Meaning: A change to a lower state or level (हस्तांतरण)

Synonyms: Decline, Degrade, Downfall

Antonyms: Advancement, Development, Growth

Sentence: The government is ready for devolution of the power from central to local government.

4. Salient (Noun) – Trick: Sale + Line

Meaning: The quality of being noticeable or important (मुख्य)

Synonyms: Outstanding, Bold, Brilliant

Antonyms: Insignificant, Hidden, Shrouded

Sentence: The salient feature of the new iPhone will be detailed in the press conference.

5. Tandem (Adverb) – Trick: Tan + Dhan + Man

Meaning: Alongside each other (मिलकर)

Synonyms: Together

Antonyms: Individual, Single

Sentence: The two teams are designed to work in tandem.

6. Abandon (Verb) – Trick: Ban + Don

Meaning: Cease to support, leave empty (छोड़ देना)

Synonyms: Give up, Surrender, Indulge

Antonyms: Stick by, Continue, Keep, Claim

Sentence: The captain gave the order to abandon the ship.

7. Lacuna – Trick: Lack you

Meaning: An unfilled space (खामियों)

Synonyms: Crunch, Dearth, Deficiency

Antonyms: Abundance, Adequacy, Amplitude

Sentence: There is a major lacuna that needs to be addressed.

8. Ombudsman (Noun)

Meaning: An official appointed to investigate individuals’ complaint against a company etc (लोकपाल)

Sentence: There are many banking ombudsmen under the RBI.

9. Canvass (Noun) – Trick: Can + Vas

Meaning: try to obtain support

Synonyms: Interview, Poll, Solicit, Survey

Antonyms: Criticize, Disrepute

Sentence: The committee was set up to canvass the city’s educational options.

10. Heterogeneous (Adj.) – Trick: Har Tarah ki Genes

Meaning: Diverse in character or content (विषमरूप)

Synonyms: Assorted, Mixed, Varied

Antonyms: Homogeneous

Sentence: Both the products are heterogeneous.
