The Hindu Editorial VOCAB:  2nd October 2021

 ‘Vocabulary’

  1. Haywire (adj.)

Meaning: erratic; out of control. (उत्तेजित)

Synonyms: out of order, erratic, faulty

Antonyms: in order, under control

Sentence: After that, things started to go haywire.

  1. Tantrum (noun)

Meaning: an uncontrolled outburst of anger and frustration, typically in a young child. (गुस्से का आवेश)

Synonyms: fit of temper, fit of rage, fit of pique

Antonyms: peace, calm, quiet

Sentence: He has temper tantrums if he can’t get his own way.

  1. Vindictive (adj.)

Meaning: having or showing a strong or unreasoning desire for revenge. (प्रतिशोधी)

Antonyms: forgiving, merciful, relenting

Sentence: I have no vindictive feelings about it.

  1. Jolting (verb)

Meaning: push or shake (someone or something) abruptly and roughly. (झटका)

Synonyms: push, thrust, knock

Sentence: A surge in the crowd behind him jolted him forward.

  1. Fiasco (noun)

Meaning: a thing that is a complete failure, especially in a ludicrous or humiliating way. (असफलता)

Synonyms: failure, debacle, shambles

Antonyms: hit, smash, success

Sentence: The mass rally was a total fiasco.

  1. Unravel (verb)

Meaning: investigate and solve or explain (something complicated or puzzling). (सुलझाना)

Synonyms: solve, resolve, work out

Antonyms: entangle, jumble, snarl

Sentence: They were attempting to unravel the cause of death.

  1. Preposterous (adj.)

Meaning: contrary to reason or common sense; utterly absurd or ridiculous. (निरर्थक)

Synonyms: absurd, ridiculous, foolish

Antonyms: realistic, reasonable

Sentence: That’s a preposterous excuse!

  1. Capricious (adj.)

Meaning: given to sudden and unaccountable changes of mood or behavior. (मनमौजी)

Synonyms: fickle, inconstant, changeable

Antonyms: changeless, constant, immutable

Sentence: It’s terrible to feel our livelihood hinges on a capricious boss.

  1. Subterfuge (noun)

Meaning: deceit used in order to achieve one’s goal. (छल)

Synonyms: trickery, intrigue, deviousness

Antonyms: candor, directness

Sentence: Journalists often use subterfuge to obtain material for stories

  1. Lackadaisical (adj.)

Meaning: lacking enthusiasm and determination; carelessly lazy. (नाजुक)

Synonyms: careless, enervated, languid

Antonyms: energetic, enterprising, motivated

Sentence: David has a rather lackadaisical approach to his work
