 ‘Vocabulary’

  1. Stuttering (adj.)

Meaning: spoken with or characterized by a stutter. (हकलाना)

Synonyms: stammering, faltering, ineloquent

Antonyms: fluent, eloquent, articulate

Sentence: Kline’s mockery of Palin’s stuttering in the movie was offensive.

  1. Devolution (noun)

Meaning: the transfer or delegation of power to a lower level, especially by central government to local or regional administration. (हस्तांतरण)

Synonyms: deterioration, decline, degradation

Antonyms: development, growth, ascent

Sentence: Once elected, they would negotiate for greater devolution.

  1. Depose (verb)

Meaning: remove from office suddenly and forcefully. (निकाल देना)

Synonyms: overthrow, overturn, dismiss

Antonyms: initiate, appoint, elect

Sentence: He had been deposed by a military coup.

  1. Jejune (adj.)

Meaning: causing weariness, restlessness, or lack of interest (ग़ैरदिलचस्प)

Synonyms: boring, tiring, stupid

Antonyms: interesting, involving, intriguing

Sentence: We were surprised by their jejune responses to our problems.

  1. Barbarity (noun)

Meaning: extreme cruelty or brutality. (क्रूरता)

Synonyms: brutality, cruelty, inhumanity

Antonyms: humanity, humaneness, benignity

Sentence: The barbarity of the old regime was eventually exposed.

  1. Antithetical (adj.)

Meaning: directly opposed or contrasted; mutually incompatible. (विरोधात्मक)

Synonyms: opposed to, contrary to, contradictory to

Antonyms: similar, analogous, noncontradictory

Sentence: Their priorities are antithetical to those of environmentalists.

  1. Tizzy (noun)

Meaning: a state of nervous excitement or agitation. (घबराहट)

Synonyms: panic, huff, fluster

Sentence: She was in a real tizzy before the meeting.

  1. Wrest (verb)

Meaning: forcibly pull (something) from a person’s grasp. (हथिया लेना)

Synonyms: wrench, snatch, seize

Antonyms: release, give

Sentence: I managed to wrest the photograph from his grasp.

  1. Covenant (noun)

Meaning: a formal agreement between two or more nations or peoples (अनुबंध)

Synonyms: contract, compact, treaty

Sentence: The two countries signed a peace covenant that, it was hoped, would put an end to decades of bitter conflict.

  1. Prim (adj.)

Meaning: stiffly formal and respectable; feeling or showing disapproval of anything regarded as improper. (नैतिक)

Synonyms: puritanical, proper, moral

Antonyms: permissive, improper, indecent

Sentence: A very prim and proper matron was in charge of the girls’ dorm.
