The Hindu Editorial VOCAB:  31st March 2023

In the modern competitive era, most of the exams have the English Language as a section. So here we bring you The Hindu Vocab on daily basis to enhance vocabulary power and help you prepare for the exams like Banking, Railway, Insurance, SSC, and other Government exams.

 ‘Vocabulary’

  1. Thingamabob (noun)

Meaning: something unspecified whose name is either forgotten or unknown (अज्ञात)

Synonyms: doohickey, thingummy, doodad

Sentence: Our intern got us one of those thingamabobs which you can use to take selfies.

  1. Hardhanded (adj.)

Meaning: difficult to endure; as in tough (कठोर)

Synonyms: tough, harsh, hard

Antonyms: easy, light, soft

Sentence: The hardhanded rule of a tyrannical regime.

  1. Rigged (verb)

Meaning: to provide (someone) with what is needed for a task or activity (प्रस्तुत)

Synonyms: equipped, furnished, supplied

Antonyms: stripped, deprived, divested

Sentence: Our boat has been rigged up with new sails.

  1. Meritocracy (noun)

Meaning: the government or the holding of power by people selected on the basis of their ability. (प्रतिभा के आधार पर चयन किया सरकार)

Synonyms: government, administration, regime

Sentence: However, in a meritocracy, those at the bottom are clearly inferior.

  1. Siphoned (verb)

Meaning: to remove (liquid) gradually or completely (बाहर निकाला)

Synonyms: pumped, drained, sucked

Antonyms: filled, soaked, watered

Sentence: The waste liquid needs to be siphoned off.

  1. Encapsulate (verb)

Meaning: to make into a short statement of the main points (as of a report) (संक्षिप्त करना)

Synonyms: summarize, reprise, recapitulate

Antonyms: extend, prolong, lengthen

Sentence: It was very difficult to encapsulate the story of the revolution in a single one-hour documentary.

  1. Devise (verb)

Meaning: to create or think of by clever use of the imagination (ईजाद करना)

Synonyms: concoct, invent, conceive

Antonyms: replicate, mimic. imitate

Sentence: Scientists are working to devise a means of storing this type of power.

  1. Fickle (adj.)

Meaning: changing frequently, especially as regards one’s loyalties, interests, or affection. (अस्थिर)

Synonyms: capricious, changeable, variable

Antonyms: constant, certain, unchanging

Sentence: Fortune is fickle.

  1. Piquant (adj.)

Meaning: having a pleasantly sharp taste or appetizing flavor. (सरस)

Synonyms: spicy, tangy, spiced

Antonyms: tasteless, dull

Sentence: Bland vegetables are often served with a piquant sauce.

  1. Gratis (adv.)

Meaning: without charge; free. (निःशुल्क)

Synonyms: free, without charge, for nothing

Antonyms: paid, costly

Sentence: I’ll give it to you, gratis!
