 ‘Vocabulary’

  1. Dereliction (noun)

Meaning: The state of having been abandoned and become dilapidated. (कर्तव्य का त्याग)

Synonyms: dilapidation, disrepair, decrepitude

Antonyms: reclamation, recoupment, repossession

Sentence: He pleaded guilty to willful dereliction of duty.

  1. Sacrosanct (adj.)

Meaning: (especially of a principle, place, or routine) regarded as too important or valuable to be interfered with. (पुण्यमय)

Synonyms: sacred, hallowed, respected

Antonyms: unhallowed, deconsecrated, desacralized

Sentence: Freedom of the press is sacrosanct.

  1. Floundering (verb)

Meaning: struggle or stagger helplessly or clumsily in water or mud. (लड़खड़ाना)

Synonyms: barging, clumping, flogging

Antonyms: coasting, gliding, sliding

Sentence: People were floundering about in the water, shouting and screaming.

  1. Subversive (adj.)

Meaning: seeking or intended to subvert an established system or institution. (विनाशक)

Synonyms: disruptive, troublemaking, inflammatory

Antonyms: liberal, progressive

Sentence: A subversive organization determined to unseat a leader who they believed operated outside the law.

  1. Staunch (adj.)

Meaning: loyal and committed in attitude. (निष्ठावान)

Synonyms: stalwart, loyal, faithful

Antonyms: disloyal, faithless, false

Sentence: She’s a staunch advocate of free trade.

  1. Entwine (verb)

Meaning: wind or twist together; interweave. (गुथना)

Synonyms: wind around, twist around, coil around

Antonyms: disentangle, uncoil, entwine

Sentence: All these threads, and more, entwine in the lines of longitude.

  1. Garrulity (noun)

Meaning: excessive talkativeness, especially on trivial matters. (बातूनीपन)

Synonyms: talkativeness, garrulousness, loquacity

Antonyms: brevity, briefness, compactness

Sentence: In her article, the professor resorts to garrulity in a vain attempt to disguise the fact that she has very little worth saying.

  1. Morose (adj.)

Meaning: sullen and ill-tempered. (उदास)

Synonyms: sullen, sulky, gloomy

Antonyms: bright, cheerful, mirthful

Sentence: Daniel seems very morose and gloomy.

  1. Merriment (noun)

Meaning: gaiety and fun. (आमोद)

Synonyms: exuberance, cheerfulness, gaiety

Antonyms: dejection, depression, despondence

Sentence: Their unexpected merriment made him nervously inquire as to the reason for it.

  1. Kith (noun)

Meaning: one’s friends, acquaintances, and relations. (स्वजन)

Synonyms: family, kin, relations

Sentence: I had a reunion today with all my kith and kin.
