The Hindu Editorial VOCAB:  4th October 2022

  1. Reconciler (noun)

Meaning: a person who brings about peace, especially by reconciling adversaries. (सुलहकर्ता)

Synonyms: conciliator, peacemaker, arbitrator

Antonyms: rabble-rousers, protesters, agitators

Sentence: He is the great reconciler and harmonizer.

  1. Fleece (verb)

Meaning: obtain a great deal of money from (someone), typically by overcharging or swindling them. (फ़ायदा उठाना)

Synonyms: swindle, cheat, defraud

Sentence: Swindlers who use the telephone to fleece senior citizens out of their savings.

  1. Vamoose (verb)

Meaning: depart hurriedly. (जल्दी से निकल जाना)

Synonyms: depart, exit, walk out

Antonyms: arrive, come,

Sentence: We’d better vamoose before we’re caught.

  1. Collude (verb)

Meaning: cooperate in a secret or unlawful way in order to deceive or gain an advantage over others (सांठगांठ)

Synonyms: combine, conspire, collaborate

Antonyms: differ, disagree, split

  1. Emolument (noun)

Meaning: a salary, fee, or profit from employment or office. (वेतन)

Synonyms: payment, fee, charge

Sentence: The annual emolument for the director of the charity is officially only one

dollar.

  1. Multifarious (adj.)

Meaning: many and of various types. (विविध)

Synonyms: multiform, multiple, different

Antonyms: monolithic, alike, identical

Sentence: Spain is a composite of multifarious traditions and people.

  1. Forgery (noun)

Meaning: the action of forging or producing a copy of a document, signature, banknote, or work of art. (जालसाजी)

Synonyms: counterfeiting, fraudulent copying, fraudulent imitation

Antonyms: original

Sentence: He spent 5 years in prison for forgery.

  1. Downtrodden (adj.)

Meaning: oppressed or poorly treated by people in power. (उत्पीड़ित)

Synonyms: oppressed, subjugated, persecuted

Antonyms: invigorated, gladdened, encouraged

Meaning: release from slavery; set free. (रिहा करना)

  1. Sultry (adj.)

Meaning: (of the air or weather) hot and humid. (उमसदार)

Synonyms: humid, tropical, torrid

Antonyms: algid, arctic, cool
