The Hindu Editorial VOCAB:  5th September 2022

Almost every competitive exam has a section that tests the applicant’s English Language skills. So here we bring you The Hindu Vocab on daily basis to boost vocabulary power and help you prepare for the exams like Banking, Railway, Insurance, SSC, and other Government exams.

‘Vocabulary’

  1. Aphoristic (adj.)

Meaning: marked by the use of few words to convey much information or meaning (सूत्र-रूप में)

Synonyms: brief, capsule, compact

Antonyms: long-winded, prolix, redundant

Sentence: The language is austere and aphoristic.

  1. Outpace (verb)

Meaning: go, rise, or improve faster than. (आगे बढ़ना)

Synonyms: outrun, outstrip, overtake

Antonyms: decelerate, slow

Sentence: Population growth has continued to outpace job growth for the last several decades.

  1. Edifice (noun)

Meaning: a building, especially a large, imposing one. (भवन)

Synonyms: building, structure, construction

Sentence: The town hall is the only edifice surviving from the fifteenth century.

  1. Caliginous (adj.)

Meaning: being without light or without much light (अंधेरा)

Synonyms: black, dark, darkened

Antonyms: bright, brightened, illuminated

Sentence: Without a flashlight, there was no way to tell what kind of creatures lurked in the caliginous cave.

  1. Stealthily (adv.)

Meaning: in a cautious and surreptitious manner, so as not to be seen or heard. (छिपकर)

Synonyms: furtively, secretively, sneakily

Antonyms: openly, publicly

Sentence: The thief stealthily stole into the house.

  1. Gripping (adj.)

Meaning: firmly holding the attention or interest; exciting. (मनोरंजक)

Synonyms: enthralling, fascinating, immersing

Antonyms: boring, drab, monotonous

Sentence: The film turned out to be a gripping thriller.

  1. Hoodlum (noun)

Meaning: a person who engages in crime and violence; a hooligan or gangster. (बदमाश)

Synonyms: hooligan, thug, ruffian

Sentence: Some of the hoodlums beat their victims viciously before robbing them.

  1. Inculcate (verb)

Meaning: instill (an attitude, idea, or habit) by persistent instruction. (मन में बैठाना)

Synonyms: instil, implant, imbue

Antonyms: deprive, clear, empty

Sentence: Not all schools manage to successfully inculcate a love of learning.

  1. Impresario (noun)

Meaning: a person who organizes and often finances concerts, plays, or operas. (आयोजक)

Synonyms: organizer, manager, producer

Sentence: It was the actor’s dream to work under the renowned impresario.

  1. Recrimination (noun)

Meaning: an accusation in response to one from someone else. (अभियोग)

Synonyms: incrimination, charge, complaint

Sentence: Let’s not indulge in recrimination.
