The Hindu Editorial VOCAB:  6th August 2022

‘Vocabulary’

  1. Abjured (verb)

Meaning: solemnly renounce (a belief, cause, or claim). (परित्यक्त)

Synonyms: renounce, relinquish, reject

Antonyms: adhere (to), admit, affirm

Sentence: The conqueror tried to make the natives abjure their religion.

  1. Hone (verb)

Meaning: sharpen (a blade). (तेज करना)

Synonyms: sharpen, make sharper

Antonyms: blunt, dull

Sentence: He was carefully honing the curved blade.

  1. Forgo (verb)

Meaning: omit or decline to take (something pleasant or valuable); go without. (त्यागना)

Synonyms: abstain (from), forbear, give up

Antonyms: give in, submit

Sentence: I’ll forgo dessert tonight as I’m trying to lose weight

  1. Parochialism (noun)

Meaning: a limited or narrow outlook, especially focused on a local area; narrow-mindedness. (संकीर्णता)

Synonyms: localism, provincialism, insularity

Antonyms: broad-mindedness, liberalism

Sentence: We have been guilty of parochialism, of resistance to change.

  1. Mooted (verb)

Meaning: raise (a question or topic) for discussion; suggest (an idea or possibility). (बहस करना)

Synonyms: raise, bring up, broach

Antonyms: censored, hushed (up), quieted

Sentence: The idea was first mooted as long ago as the 1840s.

  1. Infamy (noun)

Meaning: the state of being well known for some bad quality or deed. (बदनामी)

Synonyms: notoriety, disrepute, disreputableness

Antonyms: esteem, honor, respect

Sentence: Despite her eventual pardons, she could never completely free herself of the infamy of being named a war criminal.

  1. Dilapidating (verb)

Meaning: cause (something) to fall into disrepair or ruin. (जीर्ण-शीर्ण)

Synonyms: breaking down, corrupting, degrading

Antonyms: ameliorating, improving, meliorating

Sentence: The hotel we stayed in was really dilapidated.

  1. Lambaste (verb)

Meaning: criticize (someone or something) harshly. (आलोचना करना)

Synonyms: criticize, castigate, chastise

Antonyms: acclaim, commend, compliment

Sentence: The professor lambasted me for my careless mistake.

  1. Credulous (adj.)

Meaning: having or showing too great a readiness to believe things. (विश्रंभी)

Synonyms: gullible, naïve, impressionable

Antonyms: doubting, incredulous, careful

Sentence: Credulous people are easily misled by false advertisements.

  1. Didactic (adj.)

Meaning: intended to teach, particularly in having moral instruction as an ulterior motive. (शिक्षाप्रद)

Synonyms: instructive, instructional, educational

Antonyms: erroneous, pernicious, misleading

Sentence: A didactic novel that set out to expose social injustice.
