The Hindu Editorial VOCAB:  6th February 2023

In the modern competitive era, most of the exams have English Language as a section. So here we bring you The Hindu Vocab on daily basis to enhance vocabulary power and help you prepare for the exams like Banking, Railway, Insurance, SSC, and other Government exams.

 ‘Vocabulary’

  1. Corpus (noun)

Meaning: a collection of written texts, especially the entire works of a particular author or a body of writing on a particular subject. (समूह)

Synonyms: collection, compilation, entity

Sentence: I’ve got the corpus of Shakespeare’s works.

  1. Resounding (adj.)

Meaning: experiencing pleasure, satisfaction, or delight (शानदार)

Synonyms: enormous, delighted, joyful

Antonyms: sad, unhappy, joyless

Sentence: The astronaut was welcomed with joyous, resounding acclaim.

  1. Prying (adj.)

Meaning: excessively interested in a person’s private affairs; too inquisitive. (ताक-झाँक करना)

Synonyms: curious, nosy, inquisitive

Antonyms: disinterested, indifferent

Sentence: We do not want people prying into our affairs.

  1. Kudos (noun)

Meaning: praise and honor received for an achievement. (प्रशंसा)

Synonyms: prestige, cachet, glory

Antonyms: criticize, reprimand

Sentence: He received kudos from everyone on his performance.

  1. Brevity (noun)

Meaning: concise and exact use of words in writing or speech. (संक्षिप्तता)

Synonyms: conciseness, concision, succinctness

Antonyms: lengthiness, extensiveness, extending

Sentence: His essays are models of clarity and brevity.

  1. Wearisome (adj.)

Meaning: causing one to feel tired or bored. (थकाऊ)

Synonyms: tiring, exhausting, boring

Antonyms: interesting, engrossing, involving

Sentence: Simple repetitive tasks can be very wearisome.

  1. Seminal (adj.)

Meaning: (of a work, event, moment, or figure) strongly influencing later developments. (प्रभावपूर्ण)

Synonyms: influential, formative, pioneering

Antonyms: small, little, minor

Sentence: His book on social policy proved to be seminal.

  1. Heft (adj.)

Meaning: large, heavy, and powerful. (बलवान)

Synonyms: burly, heavy, sturdy

Antonyms: weakness, helplessness, impotence

Sentence: Some synthetic fabrics are nice and warm, but I prefer wool because it has more heft.

  1. Comport (verb)

Meaning: accord with; agree with. (सहमत होना)

Synonyms: correspond, conform, coincide

Antonyms: contradict, differ (from), disagree (with)

Sentence: His statement did not comport with the facts.

  1. Quaint (adj.)

Meaning: different from the ordinary in a way that causes curiosity or suspicion (विचित्र)

Synonyms: bizarre, strange, weird

Antonyms: typical, normal, ordinary

Sentence: Grandma lives in a quaint old cottage.
