The Hindu Editorial VOCAB:  6th May 2023

In the modern competitive era, most of the exams have English Language as a section. So here we bring you The Hindu Vocab on daily basis to enhance vocabulary power and help you prepare for the exams like Banking, Railway, Insurance, SSC, and other Government exams.

 ‘Vocabulary’

  1. Flummox (verb)

Meaning: perplex (someone) greatly; bewilder. (घबराना)

Synonyms: baffle, bewilder, mystify

Antonyms: clarify, enlighten, help

Sentence: He was completely flummoxed by the question.

  1. Cordoned (verb)

Meaning: prevent access to or from an area or building by surrounding it with police or other guards. (घेराबंदी कर दी)

Synonyms: close off, seal off, tape off

Sentence: Police cordoned off part of the city centre.

  1. Tantamount (adj.)

Meaning: equivalent in seriousness to; virtually the same as. (समान)

Synonyms: equivalent to, equal to, amounting to

Antonyms: disparate, distinct, distinguishable

Sentence: This invasion is tantamount to a declaration of war.

  1. Covenant (noun)

Meaning: an agreement. (प्रतिज्ञापत्र)

Synonyms: contract, compact, treaty

Sentence: There was a covenant between them that her name was never to be mentioned.

  1. Remorseful (adj.)

Meaning: filled with remorse; sorry. (ग्लानि से पूर्ण)

Synonyms: sorry, full of regret, regretful

Antonyms: impenitent, remorseless, unapologetic

Sentence: He seemed genuinely remorseful for what he had done.

  1. Recidivate (verb)

Meaning: go back to bad behaviour (दोहराना)

Synonyms: fall back, regress, relapse

Sentence: Sometimes, those who come out of jail receive no support so they have no choice but to recidivate.

  1. Discomfiture (noun)

Meaning: a feeling of unease or embarrassment; awkwardness. (पराभव)

Synonyms: embarrassment, unease, uneasiness

Antonyms: assurance, composure, confidence

Sentence: Without experiencing discomfiture and setbacks, one can never find truth.

  1. Depraved (adj.)

Meaning: morally corrupt; wicked. (भ्रष्ट)

Synonyms: corrupted, perverted, deviant

Antonyms: virtuous, uncorrupted, honest

Sentence: He thought we were all depraved gamblers.

  1. Unassailable (adj.)

Meaning: unable to be attacked, questioned, or defeated. (अभेद्य)

Synonyms: impregnable, invulnerable, impenetrable

Antonyms: blasphemous, irreverent, profane

Sentence: That is one of the unassailable beliefs of that political party.

  1. Citadel (noun)

Meaning: a fortress, typically on high ground, protecting or dominating a city. (गढ़)

Synonyms: fortress, fort, stronghold

Sentence: The town has a 14th century citadel overlooking the river.
