In the modern competitive era, most of the exams have the English Language as a section. So here we bring you The Hindu Vocab on daily basis to enhance vocabulary power and help you prepare for the exams like Banking, Railway, Insurance, SSC, and other Government exams.
‘Vocabulary’
- Turmoil (noun)
Meaning: a state of great disturbance, confusion, or uncertainty. (उथल-पुथल)
Synonyms: confusion, upheaval, turbulence
Antonyms: calm, ease, peace
Sentence: Her mind was in a state of constant turmoil.
- Crusader (noun)
Meaning: a fighter in the medieval Crusades. (जेहादी)
Synonyms: campaigner, fighter, battler
Antonyms: dabbler, dilettante, nonmilitant
Sentence: He fought as a crusader at the Navas de Tolosa, he went to Rome to be crowned and did voluntary homage to the pope.
- Credible (adj.)
Meaning: able to be believed; convincing. (विश्वसनीय)
Synonyms: acceptable, trustworthy, reliable
Antonyms: unbelievable, unsure, doubtful
Sentence: Few people found his story credible.
- Aghast (adj.)
Meaning: filled with horror or shock. (भौचक्का)
Synonyms: horrified, appalled, astounded
Antonyms: fearless, unafraid, brave
Sentence: When the news came out they were aghast.
- Steer (verb)
Meaning: (of a person) guides or control the movement of (a vehicle, vessel, or aircraft), for example by turning a wheel or operating a rudder. (मार्गदर्शन करना)
Synonyms: guide, direct, maneuver
Antonyms: follow, trail
Sentence: He steered the boat slowly toward the busy quay.
- Evasion (noun)
Meaning: the action of evading something. (टालना)
Synonyms: avoidance, dodging, eluding
Antonyms: abidance, endurance, submission
Sentence: He was arrested for tax evasion.
- Spurious (adj.)
Meaning: not being what it purports to be; false or fake. (नक़ली)
Synonyms: bogus, fake, not genuine
Antonyms: genuine, real, actual
Sentence: He was arrested in 1979 on spurious corruption charges.
- Vengeful (adj.)
Meaning: seeking to harm someone in return for a perceived injury. (तामसिक)
Synonyms: vindictive, revengeful, out for revenge
Antonyms: delight, pleasure, calmness
Sentence: He was stabbed to death by his vengeful wife.
- Menace (verb)
Meaning: threaten, especially in a malignant or hostile manner. (खतरा)
Synonyms: threaten, scare, imperil
Antonyms: guard, protect, save
Sentence: Africa’s elephants are still menaced by poaching.
- Scruffy (adj.)
Meaning: shabby and untidy or dirty (मैला-कुचैला)
Synonyms: shabby, worn, shoddy
Antonyms: smart, tidy, clean
Sentence: His scruffy appearance does not reflect his character.
