 ‘Vocabulary’

  1. Abash (verb)

Meaning: make (someone) feel embarrassed, disconcerted, or ashamed. (लज्जित करना)

Synonyms: embarrassed, ashamed, shamefaced

Antonyms: comfort, console, relieve

Sentence: The girl was abashed by the laughter of her classmates.

  1. Perverse (adj.)

Meaning: (of a person or their actions) showing a deliberate and obstinate desire to behave in a way that is unreasonable or unacceptable, often in spite of the consequences. (विकृत)

Synonyms: awkward, contrary, difficult

Antonyms: affable, companionable, cordial

Sentence: This kind of reasoning is deeply perverse.

  1. Disburse (verb)

Meaning: pay out (money from a fund). (चुकाना)

Synonyms: pay out, spend, expend

Antonyms: acquire, earn, gain

Sentence: The funds were to be disbursed in two installments.

  1. Ponderous (adj.)

Meaning: slow and clumsy because of great weight. (भारी-भरकम)

Synonyms: clumsy, slow, heavy

Antonyms: lightweight, fluffy

Sentence: Her footsteps were heavy and ponderous.

  1. Variegated (adj.)

Meaning: marked by a variety of usually vivid colors. (तरह तरह का)

Synonyms: chromatic, colored, colorful

Antonyms: colorless, monochromatic

Sentence: This plant has beautifully variegated leaves.

  1. Arraignment (noun)

Meaning: the action of arraigning someone in court. (आक्षेप)

Synonyms: indictment, accusation, denunciation

Antonyms: guiltlessness, innocence

Sentence: They are scheduled for arraignment October 5th.

  1. Nimble (adj.)

Meaning: quick and light in movement or action; agile. (चतुर)

Synonyms: agile, lithe, sprightly

Antonyms: vacuous, weak-minded, witless

Sentence: She showed some nimble footwork and looked a promising player.

  1. Wile (noun)

Meaning: devious or cunning stratagems employed in manipulating or persuading someone to do what one wants. (छलबल)

Synonyms: tricks, ruses, ploys

Antonyms: sincerity, candidness, candor

Sentence: Fox’s wiles will never enter the lion’s head.

  1. Wretched (adj.)

Meaning: (of a person) in a very unhappy or unfortunate state. (मनहूस)

Synonyms: miserable, unhappy, sad

Antonyms: great, marvellous, wonderful

Sentence: I felt so wretched because I thought I might never see you again.

  1. Rescinding (verb)

Meaning: revoke, cancel, or repeal (a law, order, or agreement). (रद्द कर देना)

Synonyms: revoke, repeal, abrogate

Antonyms: continuing, keeping, initiating

Sentence: Now I’m thinking of rescinding employee ownership, although there is some difficulty in doing that.
