‘Vocabulary’
- Dissentient (adj.)
Meaning: in opposition to a majority or official opinion. (भिन्न-मत का)
Synonyms: dissenting, dissident, disagreeing
Antonyms: conforming, conformist
Sentence: The bill passed with one dissentient vote.
- Clandestinely (adv.)
Meaning: in a secretive and illicit way. (गुप्त रूप से)
Synonyms: collusively, covertly, furtively
Antonyms: openly, publicly
Sentence: We traveled clandestinely by helicopter one evening and kept strictly to ourselves what we saw there.
- Sleuth (noun)
Meaning: a person who investigates crimes; a detective. (जासूस)
Synonyms: private detective, detective, private investigator
Sentence: The trusty Dr Watson narrates the stories of his adventures with the sleuth of Baker Street.
- Portentous (adj.)
Meaning: of or like a portent. (अमंगल)
Synonyms: ominous, warning, foreshadowing
Antonyms: unthreatening, auspicious, benign
Sentence: There was nothing portentous or solemn about him.
- Piddling (adj.)
Meaning: pathetically trivial; trifling. (क्षुद्र)
Synonyms: trivial, trifling, petty
Antonyms: consequential, considerable, important
Sentence: I don’t want to hear all the piddling little details!
- Woebegone (adj.)
Meaning: sad or miserable in appearance. (शोकग्रस्त)
Synonyms: sad, unhappy, miserable
Antonyms: blissful, joyful, delighted
Sentence: There’s no need to look so woebegone – we can get it fixed.
- Unassailable (adj.)
Meaning: unable to be attacked, questioned, or defeated. (अभेद्य)
Synonyms: impregnable, invulnerable, impenetrable
Antonyms: blasphemous, irreverent, profane
Sentence: That is one of the unassailable beliefs of that political party.
- Caviling (verb)
Meaning: make petty or unnecessary objections. (गुस्ताखी करना)
Synonyms: complain, carp, grumble
Antonyms: approving, supporting
Sentence: They caviled at our calculations.
- Sedate (adj.)
Meaning: calm, dignified, and unhurried. (गंभीर)
Synonyms: calm, tranquil, placid
Antonyms: facetious, kittenish, ludic
Sentence: The wedding was rather a sedate occasion.
- Addendum (noun)
Meaning: an item of additional material, typically omissions, added at the end of a book or other publication. (परिशिष्ट)
Synonyms: appendix, codicil, postscript
Antonyms: introduction, preface, prologue
Sentence: I follow this letter with the addendum duly signed for your attention.
