The Hindu Editorial VOCAB:  8th January 2022

 ‘Vocabulary’

  1. Complacency (noun)

Meaning: a feeling of smug or uncritical satisfaction with oneself or one’s achievements. (शालीनता)

Synonyms: smugness, self-satisfaction, self-approval

Antonyms: humbleness, humility, modesty

Sentence: Doctors have warned against complacency in fighting common diseases.

  1. Harshest (adj.)

Meaning: unpleasantly rough or jarring to the senses. (सख्त से सख्त)

Synonyms: grating, jarring, grinding

Antonyms: easy, light, soft

Sentence: Your hair will feel soft and happy throughout even the harshest of winters.

  1. Ignominy (noun)

Meaning: public shame or disgrace. (बदनामी)

Synonyms: shame, humiliation, embarrassment

Antonyms: esteem, honor, respect

Sentence: He spent the remainder of his life in ignominy after being involved in a bribery scandal.

  1. Exemption (noun)

Meaning: the process of freeing or state of being free from an obligation or liability imposed on others. (मुक्ति)

Synonyms: dispensation, indemnity, exclusion

Antonyms: exposure, liability, openness

Sentence: You qualify for a tax exemption on the loan.

  1. Atonement (noun)

Meaning: an action taken in order to redeem oneself (प्रायश्चित करना)

Synonyms: amends, expiation, reparation

Antonyms: accusation, arraignment, impeachment

Sentence: He sent her some flowers in atonement for his earlier rudeness.

  1. Pageantry (noun)

Meaning: elaborate display or ceremony. (जलूस)

Synonyms: display, ceremony, magnificence

Antonyms: simplicity, understatement

Sentence: She loved the pageantry and tradition of the Royal Family.

  1. Synchronous (adj.)

Meaning: existing or occurring at the same time. (एक समय का)

Synonyms: coetaneous, coeval, coexistent

Antonyms: asynchronous, noncontemporary, nonsimultaneous

Sentence: Thus, tidal forces can lead to synchronous rotation.

  1. Desperation (noun)

Meaning: a state of despair, typically one which results in rash or extreme behavior. (निराशा)

Synonyms: hopelessness, despair, distress

Antonyms: hope, hopefulness, cheer

Sentence: She resorted to stealing food out of desperation.

  1. Sacrilege (noun)

Meaning: violation or misuse of what is regarded as sacred. (अपवित्रीकरण)

Synonyms: desecration, profanity, profaneness

Antonyms: adoration, glorification, worship

Sentence: It is sacrilege to steal a crucifix from an altar.

  1. Vehemence (noun)

Meaning: the display of strong feeling; passion. (उत्साह)

Synonyms: passion, ardor, fervor

Antonyms: impassiveness, impassivity, aloofness

Sentence: She was astonished at his vehemence.
