The Hindu Editorial VOCAB:  8th June 2022

 ‘Vocabulary’

  1. Muster (verb)

Meaning: a body of people come together in one place (एकत्र करना)

Synonyms: assemble, bring together, call together

Antonyms: demob, demobilize

Sentence: He could muster only 154 votes at the election.

  1. Happenstance (noun)

Meaning: formal + literary something that happens by chance (संयोग)

Synonyms: happenchance, coincidence, incident

Sentence: We met each other by happenstance.

  1. Dissension (noun)

Meaning: disagreement that leads to discord. (मतभेद)

Synonyms: disagreement, difference of opinion, dispute

Antonyms: accord, agreement, concord

Sentence: You won’t sow dissension between us.

  1. Exiguous (adj.)

Meaning: very small in size or amount. (अल्प)

Synonyms: inadequate, insufficient

Antonyms: abundant, ample, bountiful

Sentence: The rest of the old man’s exiguous savings are donated to that boy.

  1. Scorner (noun)

Meaning: a person who expresses contempt or disdain for someone or something. (उच्छृंखल)

Synonyms: decriers, denigrators, derider

Antonyms: comforters, soother, succorer

Sentence: I would not sit in the scorner’s seat, nor hurl the cynic’s ban

  1. Ethos (noun)

Meaning: the characteristic spirit of a culture, era, or community as manifested in its beliefs and aspirations. (प्रकृति)

Synonyms: spirit, character, tenor

Sentence: The revolution in the ethos of agriculture must also involve the farmers’ unions.

  1. Minatory (adj.)

Meaning: expressing or conveying a threat. (धमकी)

Synonyms: menacing, threatening, baleful

Antonyms: unthreatening, propitious

Sentence: The novel’s protagonist is haunted by a minatory black specter.

  1. Ecstasy (noun)

Meaning: an overwhelming feeling of great happiness or joyful excitement. (परमानंद)

Synonyms: rapture, bliss, elation

Antonyms: depression, misery, sadness

Sentence: My father was in ecstasy when I won my scholarship.

  1. Philippic (noun)

Meaning: a bitter attack or denunciation, especially a verbal one. (निंदापूर्ण वाक्य)

Synonyms: tirade, diatribe, invective

Antonyms: approval, blessing, commendation

Sentence: The lecture was a tremendous philippic against our culture.

  1. Recidivist (noun)

Meaning: formal a person who continues to commit crimes even after being caught and punished (मुजरिम)

Synonyms: criminal, culprit, lawbreaker

Antonyms: lawman, lawful

Sentence: Six prisoners are still at large along with four dangerous recidivists.
