‘Vocabulary’
- Wager (noun)
Meaning: an act of betting a sum of money on the outcome of an unpredictable event. (दांव)
Synonyms: bet, gamble, stake
Sentence: Lost her wager when the horse dropped out of the race.
- Jollity (noun)
Meaning: lively and cheerful activity or celebration. (चहलपहल)
Synonyms: conviviality, festivity, gaiety
Antonyms: dolefulness, melancholy, depression
Sentence: It was a memorable night of riotous jollity.
- Minuscule (adj.)
Meaning: extremely small; tiny. (छोटा)
Synonyms: tiny, minute, microscopic
Antonyms: mammoth, massive, gigantic
Sentence: All she gave him to eat was two minuscule pieces of toast.
- Profuse (adj.)
Meaning: (especially of something offered or discharged) exuberantly plentiful; abundant. (विपुल)
Synonyms: prolific, abundant, ample
Antonyms: deficient, inadequate, incomplete
Sentence: She was admitted to St Mary’s Hospital with profuse bleeding.
- Aphorism (noun)
Meaning: a pithy observation that contains a general truth, such as, “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.” (कहावत)
Synonyms: saying, maxim, axiom
Sentence: Sounds like an aphorism from some ancient sage, and so it is.
- Ebullient (adj.)
Meaning: cheerful and full of energy. (जोशीला)
Synonyms: exuberant, buoyant, cheerful
Antonyms: indolent, lazy, stolid
Sentence: My father is a naturally ebullient personality.
- Garrulous (adj.)
Meaning: excessively talkative, especially on trivial matters. (बातूनी)
Synonyms: talkative, loquacious, voluble
Antonyms: quiet, shy, closemouthed
Sentence: Who’s that garrulous kid who kept talking throughout the class?
- Contumacious (adj.)
Meaning: (especially of a defendant’s behavior) stubbornly or willfully disobedient to authority. (अवज्ञाकारी)
Synonyms: balky, contrary, defiant
Antonyms: amenable, biddable, compliant
Sentence: The judge threatened to charge the contumacious witness with contempt of court.
- Dilettante (noun)
Meaning: a person who cultivates an area of interest, such as the arts, without real commitment or knowledge. (शौक़ीन)
Synonyms: dabbler, trifler, tinkerer
Sentence: I’m too serious to be a dilettante and too much a dabbler to be a professional.
- Knack (noun)
Meaning: an acquired or natural skill at performing a task. (आदत)
Synonyms: aptitude, aptness, skill
Antonyms: inability, incapacity
Sentence: He has a knack for saying the wrong thing.
