 ‘Vocabulary’

  1. Fealty (noun)

Meaning: adherence to something to which one is bound by a pledge or duty (निष्ठा)

Synonyms: allegiance, commitment, dedication

Antonyms: treachery, disloyalty, perfidy

Sentence: He swore fealty to the king.

  1. Invidious (adj.)

Meaning: (of an action or situation) likely to arouse or incur resentment or anger in others. (अपमानजनक)

Synonyms: envious, malicious, covetous

Antonyms: generous, charitable

Sentence: Such a difficult choice placed him in an invidious position.

  1. Shtick (noun)

Meaning: a performance regularly presented by an individual or group (कार्य)

Synonyms: act, routine, performance

Sentence: His shtick as a falling-down drunk isn’t funny to people battling alcoholism.

  1. Affray (noun)

Meaning: an instance of fighting in a public place that disturbs the peace. (झगड़ा)

Synonyms: brawl, fight, confrontation

Antonyms: silence, calm

Sentence: He was charged with causing an affray.

  1. Pithy (adj.)

Meaning: marked by the use of few words to convey much information or meaning (अल्पशब्दक)

Synonyms: concise, brief, summary

Antonyms: wordy, lengthy, verbose

Sentence: Press releases must be short and pithy.

  1. Fete (noun)

Meaning: a time or program of special events and entertainment in honor of something (उत्सव)

Synonyms: celebration, jamboree, fest

Sentence: Despite the bad weather the fete will go ahead.

  1. Penitence (noun)

Meaning: the action of feeling or showing sorrow and regret for having done wrong; repentance. (पछतावा)

Synonyms: remorse, guilt, regret

Antonyms: impenitence, remorselessness

Sentence: He expressed suitable penitence for what he had done

  1. Filibuster (verb)

Meaning: a tactic for delaying or obstructing legislation by making long speeches (बाधा)

Synonyms: stonewall, blocking, hindrance

Sentence: Opponents of the bill threatened to filibuster its final stages.

  1. Consigliere (noun)

Meaning: a person who gives advice especially professionally (परामर्शदाता)

Synonyms: adviser, consultant, counselor

Antonyms: counselee

Sentence: Barry was the president’s trusted consigliere and chief political strategist.

  1. Hearsay (noun)

Meaning: information received from other people that one cannot adequately substantiate; rumor. (अफ़वाह)

Synonyms: rumor, gossip, whisper

Sentence: Her judgments are based on hearsay rather than evidence.
