Is Uniform Civil Code (UCC) the next big step for ruling government party after the changes in rules of Article 370, Triple Talaq, and CAA Bill?
The Uniform Civil Code has been important part of the Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP)’ manifesto for years, and fits the ideological outlook of the RSS (Rashtriya Swayam Sevak Sang). RSS has close relations with the political group.
What is Uniform Civil Code?
If Uniform Civil Code will be implemented in country there will be a single common law for any issues like marriage, divorce, succession, and adoption in the country. It will be no different or separate law system on the basis of religion in these matters.
It was proposed two times by rulling party but was withdrawn both times without introducing in a parliament. It was proposed in November 2019 and March 2020.
Why UCC in news?
The Union Home Minister, Amit Shah has given a hint on the possibility of ruling of Uniform Civil Code in near future.
A meeting of core committee held in party office of Bhopal, Amit Shah informed that major issues like CAA, Article 370, Triple talaq and Ram Mandir were resolved. He pointed out that it is time for working on Common Civil Code.
Pilot Project for UCC:
Amit Shah also said that a Common Civil Code will be carried out in Uttarakhand as a pilot project, whose draft is being prepared. Everything will come in order with time.
How it can be implemented?
The ruling government can impose the civil code under the Article 44 of the constitution. It can be implemented if it is passed through the parliament.
What will change with UCC?
Uniform Civil Code will replace current applicable various laws which applied on particular communities. The laws which will be replaced are the Hindu Marriage Act, Hindu Succession Act, Indian Christian Marriages Act, Indian Divorce Act, Parsi Marriage and Divorce Act.
