Two Indian cities named ‘Mumbai’ and ‘Hyderabad’ have been jointly acknowledged as ‘2021 Tree City of the World’ by the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation (UN-FAO) and Arbor Day Foundation.

The two Indian cities have won the acknowledgement for their “commitment to growing and maintaining urban trees and greenery in building healthy, resilient and happy cities”.

Mumbai has been included in the list for the first time while Hyderabad has been included in for the second consecutive year.

About Tree Cities of the World:

The United Nations’ Food and Agriculture Organisation and American non-profit organisation Arbor Day foundation has started a programme named ‘The ‘Tree Cities of the World’.

It was started as an international effort for recognizing cities and towns which are dedicated to secure their urban forests and trees with proper maintained, sustainably managed, and duly celebrated.

The process of recognisation as a Tree City:

A city is accredited as a ‘Tree City’ if it fulfills five core standards to show its commitment towards caring for its trees and forests.

The 5 core standards are as follows:

  • A written official statement towards responsibility for caring of trees within municipal boundaries.
  • Special law or policy for governing the management of forests and trees.
  • Regular updates on inventory and assessment of local tree resources.
  • A dedicated annual budget to implement tree management plan.
  • An annual celebration event to spread awareness about the tree programme.

Recognisation of Hyderabad and Mumbai as Tree Cities:

A total of 138 cities have been acknowledged for the year 2021 under the programme.

As Hyderabad planted more than 3.5 crore trees in 500 volunteer hours, it has been included in the list.

If we talking about Mumbai, it has planted 42,5000 trees in 25,000 volunteer hours. This effort of Mumbai city has included it in the list for the first time.

The 138 cities embedded 38,787,795 in 486,015 volunteer hours.

Top three countries with maximum tree cities include in the list are: the USA (37 cities), UK (19 cities), and Canada (18 cities).
