What is e-Shram Portal?

The e-Shram portal shows the first national database of unorganised workers in the country in around 92 percent of the workforce has been included.

It was launched in August 2021 to respond the migration crisis of 2020 for better execution of various social security schemes for unorganised sector workers. It is a reflection of past situation of tens of thousands of workers walked back to their homes. The crisis un-wrapped the lack of social security and accurate data on unorganised workers. The Supreme Court pointed the government to create a database after the crisis.

The portal targets to register 380 million unorganised workers in the country.

First time more women than men have registered:

Since the launch of the portal, one trend has remained constant,. According to the latest numbers reported by the Ministry of Labour and Employment for March 2022 more female than male workers have been registering.

There is more than 270 million workers have registered in which around 53 percent are female and 47 percent are male.

Each top five states on the e-Shram dashboard have been registered by women is higher. The top five states are: Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, West Bengal, Madhya Pradesh, and Odisha, Tamil Nadu (61.88), Meghalaya (66.04), and Kerala (59.58).

The reason behind higher registration by women:

In the fifth National Family Health Survey, it was feared that women will be missed out due to the sharp digital divide between men and women. At the time of launching the portal, there are less than 3 out of 10 women in rural India and 4 out of 10 women in urban India which have ever used the Internet.

Higher registration by women might be a positive sign as in India, a higher percentage of women workers are part of the informal economy compared to men. There is 94% of women workers are associated in the informal sectors.
