World Space Week: 4 to 10 October

The international celebration of science and technology holds out not a day but an entire week. World Space Week is celebrated across the globe from 4^th October to 10^th October.

The United Nations calls World Space Week the largest annual space event in the world. World Space Week recognizes how advances and contributions in science have worked for the betterment of humans.

Every year from October 4 to 10, space enthusiasts join together to celebrate what they love the most.

Theme of World Space Week 2022:

The theme of World Space Week 2022 is ‘Space and Sustainability’.

As per the United Nations, the World Space Week 2022 is focusing on “achieving sustainability in space and achieving sustainability from space”. This theme is inspired by how space sustainability depends on humans using space, especially, the orbital area around the Earth.

World Space Week will also concentrate on bringing change to Earth, by studying climate change, identifying water and soil pollution, and supporting agricultural growth in developing nations.

History about the Day:

The event of World Space Week is organized by the United Nations and the World Space Week Association (WSWA).

The United Nations General Assembly announced October 4-10 as World Space Week in 1999. The first time it was celebrated in 2000.

Selection of dates: These dates were not randomly selected. October 4 is the day of launching the first human-made Earth satellite, Sputnik 1. As Sputnik 1 had been launched into orbit in 1957 and opened the scope for space exploration.

A decade later, on October 10, 1967, the Treaty on Principles Governing the Activities of States in the Exploration and Use of Outer Space, including the Moon and Other Celestial Bodies, was signed.

Significance of the World Space Week:

The intention behind the World Space Week is to help people gain a wider knowledge about space outreach and education.

This assists people around the globe understand what benefits they can receive from space and how they can use space for sustainable economic development.

It also gives opportunity to celebrate and show public support for space programs.
