World’s Tuberculosis Day: History,theme and significance

World Tuberculosis day is observed on 24th March every year. Tuberculosis is still one the dangerous diseases and still persists its root all over the world. By observing World Tuberculosis Day, the World Health Organization renewed its commitment to eradicate Tuberculosis from all over the world.

In this article we are going to cover the history of World Tuberculosis Day as well as its significance and theme of the year 2024.

Theme:

The theme of World Tuberculosis Day 2024 is “Yes! We can end TB”. The theme is itself dedicated to encourage the people to be aware and take all precautions to end Tuberculosis around the world.

The United Nations also concluded a high level meeting on the topic of Tuberculosis in the month of September 2023. There are some point concluded during the event-

• Uptaking the WHO’S latest recommendations
• Innovation adoption
• Encourage the involvement of civil society organizations

History:

On 24th March 1982, Tuberculosis disease was first discovered by Dr. Robert Koch . It is a bacterium causing diseases. Tuberculosis disease is caused by a bacteria called Mycobacterium tuberculosis. It is an infectious disease. It can be transmitted through air by sneezing, coughing by an infected person.

Significance:

Tuberculosis continues to be a serious health concern globally as well as in India. This health challenge has been impacting millions of people for decades and and still persists as a global health challenge. India has set various dedicated and ambitious goals for eradicating Tuberculosis across the country but the speed of progress is not fast enough due to the severity of the challenge.

Challenges:

There are still many suspected persons having TB who can’t access the efficient and high quality care including diagnosis, treatment and support. Due to the complexities of controlling TB in India, there is an urgent need for a paradigm shift that is dedicated to the affected person’s life experience to tackle the Tuberculosis disease.

We need to understand the lived experiences of TB affected people who have fought and survived.

On the way of eradicating Tuberculosis in India, due to underestimating the lived experiences of affected and surviving people, we have often ignored the fact that Tuberculosis is not a disease, although it is a human crisis, gender crisis, economic challenge as well as social and environmental one.

Positive approach:

Mental health support as well as gender responsive care are needed to overall development of the eradication of Tuberculosis from India and globally. By enhancing community based TB care models, encouraging the front line health workers, strengthening supply chain,empowering local communities and decentralized TB services, India can reduce the effect of disease in the mental as well as social status of affected persons and can enhance treatment outcomes.

Conclusion:

India needs to prioritize person centered solutions to fight with Tuberculosis across the country. By remembering this day, we also make a promise to ourselves to fight together against Tuberculosis and one day India and the whole world will be free from this disease.
