  • Kuwait appointed Mariam Al-Aqeel as finance minister, the first female in the Gulf region to hold the post.
  • Kuwait, home to about 6% of the world’s oil reserves, is the fourth-biggest producer in the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries. The International Monetary Fund expects its economy to grow 0.6% this year, squeezed by a reduction in oil output as part of an OPEC agreement.

  • In a big win for Cyrus Mistry, the National Company Law Appellate Tribunal (NCLAT) on 18th December ordered restoration of him as the Executive Chairman of Tata Sons. as the Executive Chairman of Tata Sons.
  • NCLAT also held appointment of N. Chandrasekaran as Executive Chairman illegal.
  • two-judge tribunal headed by Justice S.J. Mukhopadhyay said the restoration order will be operational only after four weeks, the time allowed to Tatas to file an appeal.

Tamil writer Cho Dharman wins Sahitya Akademi award for his novel ‘Sool’

  • Tamil writer Cho Dharman has won the 2019 Sahitya Akademi award for his novel Sool, depicting the life of the people in the lower rung of society at Urulaikuddi village in Thoothukudi district.
  • He published his first short story in 1992 and followed by a novel Dhoorvai. Mr. Dharman also wrote a monograph of noted villupaattu artiste Pitchaikutti. The novel Koogai received critical acclaim and it won him the Iyal award of the Canada-based Tamil Literary Garden.
