BIMSTEC leaders invited to PM Modi’s swearing-in


  • Leaders of all BIMSTEC (Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation) nations – Bangladesh, Myanmar, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Nepal and Bhutan – will be invited for Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s swearing-in on Thursday at the Rashtrapati Bhavan in New Delhi. BIMSTEC includes countries of the Bay of Bengal region and seeks to act as a bridge between South and Southeast Asia.

Govt to merge CSO with NSSO to create new stats body


  • The government has approved the merger of National Sample Survey Office (NSSO) with the Central Statistics Office (CSO) under the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI).
  • The restructuring is in line with the proposed National Policy on Official Statistics which was floated last year. The policy suggests discontinuing with the role of the Chief Statistician of India as secretary to the National Statistical Commission (NSC) and doing away with the user of the terms CSO and NSSO Instead, the two will be treated as being under a single entity called the National Statistical Organisation (NSO).

Airtel submits Rs 644 crore bank guarantee in TDSAT for Tata Tele merger


  • Telecom operator Bharti Airte is learnt to have submitted a bank guarantee of Rs 644 crore in telecom tribunal TDSAT to complete the merger of Tata Teleservices consumer business with the company.
  • The TDSAT on May 2 granted partial stay on a Rs 8,300-crore demand raised by the telecom department from Bharti Airtel for approving its merger with the consumer business of Tata Teleservices Ltd (TTSL).
  • “Bharti Airtel has submitted bank guarantee of around Rs 644 crore in TDSAT to complete merger of Tata Telservices’ (consumer business) with the company as was directed by the tribunal,”


P.S. Golay sworn in as Sikkim Chief Minister


  • Prem Singh Tamang a.k.a P.S. Golay was on Monday sworn in as the new Chief Minister of Sikkim. His party, Sikkim Krantikari Morcha (SKM), won 17 of the 32 Assembly seats in the State, in the recently held Assembly polls. The Sikkim Democratic Front (SDF), which had ruled the State for 25 years, won 15.
  • Governor Ganga Prasad administered the Oath of Office to Mr. Golay in a grand ceremony at the Palzor stadium in Gangtok. Eleven other MLAs were sworn in as part of the Council of Ministers. This includes acting president of SKM Kunga Nima Lepcha, who won from two seats, Arun Uperti, MLA from Airthang, and Sonam Lama, who won for the Sangha seat in the Assembly which is reserved for monks.

ajiv Gauba may be next Cabinet Secretary


  • Union Home Secretary Rajiv Gauba may be appointed as next Cabinet Secretary, replacing PK Sinha, whose four-year tenure comes to an end on June 12, officials said Monday. Chief Secretary of Jammu and Kashmir, B V R Subrahmanyam, a 1987 batch IAS officer of Chhattisgarh cadre, seems to be the top contender for the post of union home secretary after Gauba.
  • Gauba, one of the senior-most bureaucrats, had served in various capacities in central government as well as in Jharkhand and Bihar governments, is supposed to complete his two-year tenure as home secretary on August 31.

NASA announces award of first contract for 2024 lunar mission Artemis

  • The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (Nasa) on Thursday announced the award of contract to develop and demonstrate power, propulsion and communications capabilities for the lunar Gateway of the space agency’s lunar exploration mission ‘Artemis’ to Maxar Technologies, formerly SSL, in Westminster, Colorado.,
  • The power and propulsion element provides a communications relay capability for Nasa’s Gateway, enabling it to serve as a mobile command and service module for human and robotic expeditions to the lunar surface.


Monaco GP: Lewis Hamilton beats Max Verstappen


  • Lewis Hamilton held off Max Verstappen, and survived a late collision with the Red Bull driver, to win a nail-biting Monaco Grand Prix.
  • Verstappen dropped from second on the road to fourth in the results because of a five-second penalty, promoting Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel to second and Mercedes’ Valtteri Bottas to third.

Kento Momota Stunned As China Win Sudirman Cup With Japan Whitewash


  • Shi Yuqi stunned world champion Kento Momota as hosts China whitewashed Japan for an 11th Sudirman Cup title on Sunday. Japan have never won the badminton world mixed-team championship and their search goes on after they were well beaten 3-0 in the Chinese city of Nanning. China’s dominant victory over the top seeds is an ominous indication of the depth they possess in their ranks with next summer’s Tokyo Olympics on the horizon.

ISSF World Cup: Apurvi Chandela bags gold medal


  • Apurvi Chandela grabbed a gold, winning the women’s 10m Air Rifle competition after a closely-fought contest.
  • Indians had a good day at the year’s third International Shooting Sport Federation (ISSF) World Cup Rifle and Pistol tournament in Munich, Germany.
  • Apurvi Chandela grabbed a gold,  winning the women’s 10m Air Rifle competition after a closely-fought contest. She shot a score of 251 in the final to outshine Wang Luyao of China, who shot 250.8.
  • This was Apurvi’s second ISSF World Cup gold of the year followed by a world record score in New Delhi in February.This was also her career’s fourth ISSF medal.

Action director Veeru Devgan, father of Ajay Devgn, passes away

  • Veeru Devgan, the popular action director behind films such as “Roti Kapda Aur Makaan” and “Mr Natwarlal” and the father of actor Ajay Devgn, passed away in Mumbai on Monday morning. He was 77. The cause of death is immediately not known but family sources said Veeru had not been keeping well for some time.
