UNESCO to publish anthology of Guru Nanak Dev's writing in world languages

  • The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) has decided to translate and publish an anthology of the writings of Guru Nanak Dev in world languages to mark his 550th birth anniversary.
  • The government is also holding a series of events and has initiated projects to mark 550th birth anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev.

♦ Tamil Nadu has received Mysore Pak GI tag

Tamil Nadu has received Mysore Pak GI tag

  • Government had given Tamil Nadu the geographical indication tag, or GI tag, for Mysore Pak, a sweet popular in South India.
  • About GI Tag: A geographical indication (GI) is a name or sign used on certain products which corresponds to a specific geographical location or origin (e.g. a town, region, or country). India, as a member of the World Trade Organization (WTO), enacted the Geographical Indications of Goods (Registration and Protection) Act, 1999 has come into force with effect from 15 September 2003.

Wipro, Industrie 4.0 Maturity Center ink partnership

  • Wipro Limited on 16 September announced its strategic partnership with Germany-based Industrie 4.0 Maturity Center GmbH (I4.0MC).
  • Aims: Combined expertise will enable manufacturing companies to efficiently implement end-to-end enterprise digital transformation.
  • Partnership will promote collaboration between academia and industry thought leaders across manufacturing industries such as automotive, consumer goods, industrial manufacturing, oil and gas and life sciences, the company.

♦ General Motors, TCS join hands for future vehicle engineering

General Motors, TCS join hands for future vehicle engineering

  • General Motors (GM) and Tata Consultancy Services on 16 September announced a new partnership under which the IT major would support the leading automaker in future vehicle engineering across global markets.
  • Deals: TCS will acquire certain assets at the GM Technical Center – India (GMTC-I), in Bengaluru, and will partner with GM, supporting its global vehicle programmes with engineering design services over the next five years.
  • 1,300 employees of GMTC-I will transfer to TCS, including teams focused on propulsion systems, vehicle engineering, controls development, testing, creative design and special projects.

Infosys co-founder Kris Gopalakrishnan to head govt's data panel

  • The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology on 13September constituted a committee under the chairmanship of Infosys co-founder Kris Gopalakrishnan to study issues related to non-personal data and suggest how the government should look at regulating it.
  • “There is a growing trend towards platformisation of the digital economy, and in such a platform economy, data could play a critical role as a community or public resource.

♦ Justice P Lakshman Reddy sworn in as first Lokayukta of Andhra Pradesh

  • Former judge of the A.P. High Court P. Lakshmana Reddy, who has been appointed Andhra Pradesh’s He will take charge here on September 15.
  • Justice Lakshmana Reddy stressed the need for creating awareness among the people on their rights.

 Bangladesh PM Sheikh Hasina receives Dr Kalam Smriti International Excellence Award

  • Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina of Bangladesh conferred the Dr Kalam Smriti International Excellence Award 2019 in Dhaka on 16 September. The award has been instituted in the memory of former President Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam.
  • Reasons: The award citation lauded Prime Minister Hasina for her vision of a peaceful and prosperous South Asia, free of tension, conflicts and terrorism. It acknowledged her contribution in fostering cooperation between India and Bangladesh.

Kaushal Dharmamer wins Myanmar International Series

  • Indian shuttler Kaushal Dharmamer clinched the Myanmar International Series title with a come-from-behind win over Indonesia’s Karono Karono in a thrilling men’s singles final here on 15 September.
  • The 23-year-old from Mumbai, who had won the Hatzor International in October last year, recovered after dropping the opening game to outwit Karono 18-21, 21-14, 21-11 in a match that lasted an hour.

♦ Spain won second FIBA basketball World Cup title

Spain won second FIBA basketball World Cup title

  • Spain captured its second FIBA basketball World Cup title after defeating Argentina 95-75 in the gold medal game at the Wukesong Arena in Beijing on 15 September.
  • The Spaniards won their first basketball World Cup title in 2006 in Japan.

♦ Lakshya Sen won Belgian International badminton title

Lakshya Sen won Belgian International badminton title

  • Rising Indian shuttler Lakshya Sen stunned second seed Victor Svendsen of Denmark in straight games to clinch the men’s singles title at the Belgian International Challenge on 14 September.
  • Lakshya was at his best as he notched up a comfortable 21-14 21-15 win over Svendsen in the title clash that lasted for 34 minutes.

♦ India to host FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in November 2020

India to host FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in November 2020

  • FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup, set to be hosted by India, will be held from November 2 to 21 next year. India was declared as the host country in March this year. The tournament is expected to be held in four Indian cities. Apparently, Bhubaneswar’s Kalinga Stadium has already been provisionally confirmed while Kolkata, Navi Mumbai, Goa and Ahmedabad as venues are also in the fray.

  • The Ozone layer or also known as Ozone shield, a delicate layer of gas, in the Earth’s stratosphere absorbs most of the Sun’s ultraviolet rays. These rays can cause a numerous skin diseases.
  • On September 16, 1987, the United Nations and 45 other countries signed the Montreal Protocol, on substances that deplete the Ozone layer. Every year this day is celebrated as the International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone layer.
