♦ Competition Commission of India (CCI) celebrates its 10th Annual Day on 20th May 2019
- The Competition Commission of India (CCI) celebrated its 10th Annual Day yesterday, i.e. on 20th May, 2019 which marks the notification of the substantive enforcement provisions of the Competition Act, 2002.
- On this occasion, Shri N. K. Singh, Chairman, Fifteenth Finance Commission, Govt. of India, delivered the Annual Day Lecture on “Should Competitive Federalism Complement Cooperative Federalism?”
♦ Anil Kapoor to be Felicitated by European Chambers of Commerce for Promoting Children’s Rights
- Actor Anil Kapoor will be felicitated by the Council of European Chambers of Commerce (CEUCC) in India and an European Union delegation as part of the Europe Day celebrations in Mumbai on Friday, an official spokesperson said.
- The actor will be the chief guest for the celebrations, which will also be attended by EU Ambassador to India Tomasz Kozlowski, EU Member states Consuls and senior representatives from the European and Indian corporate world.
- Europe Day is celebrated every year on May 9 to mark the formation of the European Union (EU).

♦ Sushma Swaraj in Kyrgyzstan to attend SCO foreign ministers meet
- External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj today embarked on a two-day visit to Kyrgyzstan capital Bishkek to represent India in the meeting of Council of Foreign Ministers of Shanghai Co-operation Organization (SCO).
- The meeting, which is beginning from today, will be the second that India will be attending as a full member of SCO.
- The meeting will exchange views on issues of international and regional importance. It will also review the preparations for the forthcoming SCO Summit in Bishkek which commences on the 13th of next month.
♦ Indian peacekeeper to be honoured posthumously with UN medal
- Police Officer Jitender Kumar made the supreme sacrifice while serving in the UN Organisation Stabilisation Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (MONUSCO).
- An Indian peacekeeper is among the 119 military, police and civilian personnel who will be honoured this year with a prestigious UN medal this year for courage and sacrifice in the line of duty.
- Police Officer Jitender Kumar made the supreme sacrifice while serving in the UN Organisation Stabilisation Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (MONUSCO).
Banking and Finance
♦ RBI to issue Rs 10 banknotes bearing sign of Shaktikanta Das soon
- Reserve Bank of India Monday said it will issue Rs 10 denomination banknotes bearing signature of Governor Shaktikanta Das. The Reserve Bank will shortly issue Rs 10 denomination banknotes in Mahatma Gandhi (new) series bearing the signature of Shaktikanta Das, Governor, RBI said in a release.
- The design of these notes is similar in all respect to Rs 10 banknotes in Mahatma Gandhi (new) series. All banknotes in the denomination of Rs 10 issued by the Reserve Bank in the past will continue to be legal tender, it said.
♦ Indus Towers, Bharti Infratel merger in advanced stage; Bimal Dayal named CEO of new entity
- Bharti and Vodafone Group Tuesday named Bimal Dayal as the CEO of the mega tower company proposed to be formed from merger of Indus Towers and Bharti Infratel and said the merger process is in “advanced stage of completion”.
- Dayal will be responsible for the combined business and take forward integration of the two companies in preparation of the merger, a joint statement said.
- “Bimal Dayal (currently CEO, Indus Towers) is proposed to be appointed as the Chief Executive Officer of the merged entity,” it said.

♦ Indo-Myanmar patrolling exercise begins near Andaman coast
- Navy ships from Myanmar reached Port Blair to attend the opening ceremony of the 8th Indo-Myanmar Coordinated Patrol (IMCOR) which will be held from May 20-28. “Myanmar Navy Ship UMS King TabinShweHtee (773) and UMS Inlay (OPV-54) have arrived at Port Blair on May 20 for the ‘Opening Ceremony’ of the 8th Indo-Myanmar coordinated patrol (IMCOR), at Andaman and Nicobar Command.
- The Myanmar delegation led by Commodore Htein Win, Commander, Ayeyarwady Naval Command, called on Cmde Ashutosh Ridhorkar, VSM, Naval Component Commander on May 20,” a press release by the Ministry of Defense read.

♦ Joko Widodo elected President of Indonesia for second term
- Indonesia’s Joko Widodo has been re-elected as president of the country, beating rival Prabowo Subianto, a retired general.
- The elections commission has said Widodo and his vice-presidential running mate Ma’ruf Amin won the election by a 55.5 percent to 44.5 percent margin over Subianto and Sandiaga Uno.
- The commission was expected to announce the official results of the April 17 poll tomorrow.
- But amid fears about unrest and street demonstrations in response to the final count, the final tally was released early with little advance notice.57-year-old Widodo, had been widely predicted to win according to unofficial results.

♦ Countdown begins for Wednesday launch of PSLV-C46 satellite, says ISRO
- The countdown for the Wednesday launch of India’s Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV) carrying the radar imaging earth observation satellite, RISAT-2B began on Tuesday, said an ISRO official.
- According to the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) official, the 25-hour countdown for the PSLV launch started at 4.30 a.m. on Tuesday.
- The PSLV-C46 as per ISRO’s numbering system, will lift-off from the first launch pad at the rocket port in Sriharikota, Andhra Pradesh at about 5.30 a.m. on Wednesday.
- The rocket will carry the RISAT-2B weighing 615 kg which will beef up India’s surveillance capabilities from the sky.

- May 21, the death anniversary of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi is observed as Anti-Terrorism Day. Rajiv Gandhi became the youngest prime minister of the country when he was sworn in at the age of 40 as the sixth Prime Minister of India after his mother Indira Gandhi’s assassination in 1984.

♦ Three-time Formula One world champion Niki Lauda passes away
- Three-time Formula One world champion Niki Lauda has passed away.
- He was 70. The veteran Austrian’s family said in a statement that Lauda, who underwent a lung transplant in August, passed away peacefully on Monday.
- One of the best-known figures in motor racing, Lauda took the title for Ferrari in 1975 and 1977 and McLaren in 1984.
