GoI and ADB signed a $200 million loan to tackle flood and erosion risk along Brahmaputra river

Government of India and Asian Development Bank signed a $200 million loan to address the flood and erosion risk along with the main stream of Brahmaputra river in the state of Assam.

A $200 million loan has been signed to strengthen the risk management associated with flood and riverbank erosion alongside the Brahmaputra river in the state of Assam.

Ms. Juhi Mukherjee, Joint Secretary, Department of Economic Affairs in the Ministry of Finance, for the Government of India, and Mr. Hoe Yun Jeong, Deputy Country Director of ADB’s India Resident Mission, for ADB were the signatories of the loan for Climate Resilient Brahmaputra Integrated Flood and Riverbank Erosion Risk Management Project in Assam.

More about the project:

This new project is inspired by the sucess of ADB-financed Assam Integrated Flood and Riverbank Erosion Risk Management Investment Programme implemented during 2010–2020 and similar investments in the Bangladesh.

The Climate Resilient Brahmaputra Integrated Flood and Riverbank Erosion Risk Management Project has major interventions including stabilizing 60km of riverbank, installation of pro-siltation measures of 32km amd building climate-resilient flood embankments in five high-priority districts (Dibrugarh, Goalpara, Kamrup Rural, Morigaon, and Tinsukia) of 4km.

Benefits of the project:

The Climate Resilient Brahmaputra Integrated Flood and Riverbank Erosion Risk Management Project in Assam will provide the broader stabilization of the Brahmaputra river especially focusing on flood and erosion vulnerable areas and further build the more fostered disaster resilience of the state.

This project will also beneficial for supporting livelihoods, creating employment opportunities, and ultimately promoting the navigability of the river. This project also will optimize co benefits by women empowerment through disaster-resilient economic activities thus benefit around 1 million people. It will also increase crop production over 50,000 hectares.

Responsible Agencies:

The lead Authority of the the Climate Resilient Brahmaputra Integrated Flood and Riverbank Erosion Risk Management Project is the Flood and River Erosion Management Agency of Assam. It will coordinate the project activities. To implement the works under this project ,The Water Resources Department of the Government of Assam has been appointed. The Assam Agroforestry Development Board will use nature-based solutions under this project. There will be also some partner agencies of this project such as The Brahmaputra Board, the Assam State Disaster Management Authority, and the Assam Inland Water Transport Development Society.

The Climate Resilient Brahmaputra Integrated Flood and Riverbank Erosion Risk Management Project funded by Asian Development Bank is one of the major flood and erosion risk management projects in Assam. It will be beneficial for promoting riverbank erosion risk management across the state with the help of various agencies.
