Now Transgender Can Avail Benefits Of PMJAY
The National Health Authority signed a Memorandum of Understanding to extend the coverage of Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojna(AB PM-JAY) to the transgender community. Now people from transgender community can avail the facilities and packages under this scheme. Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya asserted this landmark decision as a great move to help the transgender community and show respect towards them.
What is PM-JAY?
It is a healthcare scheme that includes health insurance packages and the availability of the treatments to the low earners across the country under the scheme. It was launched by PM Narendra Modi on 23 September 2018 under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. It is a part of the National Health Policy and the world’s largest healthcare programme sponsored by the government.
In the budget for 2022-23, a total amount of 6,412 cr was allotted to the PM-JAY programme and it is double what was estimated in the last year.
Important Facts:
This MoU was signed between the National Health Authority and the Ministry Of Social Justice And Empowerment and it ensures that now the transgender people will also get all healthcare benefits such as 5 lakh insurance cover per annum to the transgender person under this scheme and their family members will also get the benefits as per the scheme. A transgender person who holds a transgender certificate issued by the National Portal For Transgender Persons will be eligible under the Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojna.
Furthermore, the National Health Authority has also ensured a comprehensive and inclusive package that includes the Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojna healthcare benefits and a special package for Sex Reassignment Sugery and Treatment.

As a result now a transgender person can seek treatment in those hospitals which come under this scheme and avail the facilities and services including that special package across the country. It is a great step to erase the discrimination in the country.
Transgender community in the country faces exclusion and suffers stigma so that it becomes mandatory to take steps towards a new and effective way to combat these types of situations and make the environment better for the transgender community. This decision to extend the health coverage to the transgender community is a welcoming step.
Union Minister Mansukh Mandaviya also emphasized the rights of the transgender people. He said that by this step , Transgender community can have the environment according to their rights.
