Russia has begun delivering the S-400 Triumf surface-to-air missile system to India. As per the Russian official’s statement, India has just been started the supplies of the S-400 air defence system and the proceedings are on schedule.

The deal:

The deal of signed by India with Russia worth a $5.43 billion for five S-400 regiments in October 2018 and it was decided that all deliveries are to be completed within five years.

If we convert the amount in Indian Rupees, The S-400 air defence system deal worth around ₹35,000 crore to Indian Government and five squadrons would be supplied to India for tacking air threats.

Advantages to Indian Defence System:

The S-400 Triumf air defence missile system will give a major boost to Indian defence system to tackle and to draw off enemy fighter aircraft and cruise missiles at long range. The Indian Air Force (IAF) is going to induce the first unit of S-400 systems amid India is locked in a standoff with China in the Ladakh sector.

The air defence system would contribute to India sharpness as they would be able to draw off enemy aircraft and cruise missiles from a distance of 400km.

Deployment:

The first deployment of S-400 missile defence system will be at a place which is close to the western border of the country from where it can tackle threats from both parts of the borders with Pakistan and China.

Two S-400 squadrons have been already deployed by China at Ngari Gar Gunsa and Nyingchi airbase in Tibet, across Ladakh and Arunachal Pradesh respectively.

Features of S-400 missile defence system:

The S-400 missile defence system is fitted with four different missiles, which can lock enemy aircraft, ballistic missiles, and Airborne Warning And Control System (AWACS) planes at 400km, 250km, the medium-range 120km and the short-range 40km.

The officers and personnel of Indian Air Force have been trained in Russia to handle the missile system. It can be concentrating on the eastern borders along with providing resources for training of personnel within the country after the deployment of first squadron.
