20 Trinamool MPs Break Away from Party, Plan to Support NDA
- The internal fight within the All India Trinamool Congress reached Delhi on Monday when several Trinamool MPs attended a meeting at Union Minister Bhupender Yadav’s residence.
- The Trinamool Congress has 29 MPs in the Lok Sabha, and according to people who were present at the meeting, 20 of them have gone against party chief Mamata Banerjee and party general secretary Abhishek Banerjee.
- The 20 rebel MPs are planning to form a separate group and support the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government at the Centre.
- Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar is emerging as the leader of this rebel group. She was recently removed from the position of Trinamool chief whip in the Lok Sabha and has reportedly started moving closer to the BJP.
- According to people close to Dr. Dastidar, she is still officially listed as the Trinamool chief whip and plans to submit a letter signed by 20 MPs to the Speaker, asking for official recognition of the new group.
- This development comes just a week after around 60 of Trinamool Congress’s 80 MLAs rebelled and chose Ritabrata Banerjee as the new Leader of the Opposition.
- Ritabrata Banerjee welcomed the fast-changing political situation in Delhi and said that both the rebel MLAs and MPs are working towards the same goal.
- Photographs from the meeting showed several Trinamool MPs gathered at the Union Minister’s residence. Suvendu Adhikari was also present at the meeting.
- Sukhendu Sekhar Roy, who resigned from both the Trinamool Congress and the Rajya Sabha, also attended the meeting.
- The 20 rebel MPs reportedly include:
- Prasun Banerjee (Howrah)
- Anup Chakraborty (Bankura)
- Jagadish Chandra Barma Basunia (Cooch Behar)
- Asit Kumar Mal (Bolpur)
- Satabdi Roy (Birbhum)
- Kalipada Soren (Jhargram)
- Sharmila Sarkar (Bardhaman Purba)
- Later in the day, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee visited the Delhi residence of Trinamool MP Satabdi Roy and held talks with around 10 MPs from the rebel camp.
- Meanwhile, Firhad Hakim, a close associate of Mamata Banerjee who recently stepped down as Mayor of Kolkata, met Ritabrata Banerjee at the West Bengal Assembly on Monday.
- Commenting on the political developments, Jairam Ramesh posted on X and accused the Union Minister of spending the day “poaching” politicians. He said that the Minister’s job was to stop poaching, not take part in it.
- At the same time, leaders loyal to Mamata Banerjee openly came forward in support of her leadership.
- Trinamool MP from Bardhaman-Durgapur, Kirti Azad shared a letter on social media claiming that Mamata Banerjee had already informed the Speaker last month about Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar’s removal and Kalyan Banerjee’s appointment as chief whip.
- Kirti Azad also questioned how long the BJP would continue “misleading the people.”
- Mahua Moitra said that the MPs who are now rebelling had won the 2024 Lok Sabha election on Trinamool Congress tickets and that the public mandate was not for the NDA.
- In a social media post, Mahua Moitra said that any MP who wants to join the BJP is free to do so, but should first resign from their seat and contest again on a BJP ticket. She added that this would show their real political strength.
- Senior Trinamool MPs including Sougata Roy, Kalyan Banerjee, Mahua Moitra, Kirti Azad, and Sudip Banerjee publicly backed Mamata Banerjee and her leadership.
INDIA Bloc to Raise SIR Complaints Before the Chief Justice of India
- The Indian National Developmental, Inclusive Alliance (INDIA), in a meeting held on Monday, decided that it would write to the Chief Justice of India about concerns regarding the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) and what it called “vote loot”.
- The alliance said that Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan should immediately resign. It accused him of being responsible for the problems faced by lakhs of students who appeared in the NEET and CBSE examinations.
- The bloc also asked the Central Government to call an all-party meeting to discuss what it described as the “serious economic situation” in the country.
- Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, while starting the meeting, said that the Opposition had successfully stayed united against the now-withdrawn delimitation Bill and should continue working together in the same way.
- Former West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, whose party recently lost the Assembly elections, spoke in detail about her claim that the people’s mandate had been stolen.
- Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah said that the Congress was the “glue” that keeps the INDIA alliance united.
- Even so, the Congress was criticised for suddenly ending its alliance with the DMK after the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections.
- The Left parties questioned why the Congress had campaigned so strongly against the Left-led government in Kerala. They also accused the party of secretly helping the BJP.
- Several leaders also mentioned the recent protest held under the banner of the Cockroach Janta Party and asked whether it showed that people were becoming disappointed with the Opposition.
- According to sources, the DMK will also be requested to join in signing the proposed joint letter to the Chief Justice of India.
- Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav said that after the setbacks in West Bengal and Tamil Nadu, defeating the BJP in the Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections next year would be extremely important for the Opposition.
- He also advised the Congress to be “large-hearted” and allow strong regional parties to take the lead wherever they are more influential.
- RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav also criticised the Congress. He said that despite warnings about possible cross-voting by Congress MLAs during the recent Rajya Sabha election in Bihar, no action was taken.
- CPI(M) leader John Brittas said that Rahul Gandhi, being the face of the INDIA alliance, should not have made what he called unproven allegations against the Kerala government during the Assembly election campaign.
- CPI general secretary D. Raja supported the comments made by John Brittas.
- Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Uddhav Thackeray and CPI(ML) general secretary Dipankar Bhattacharya suggested that the INDIA alliance should create a stronger and more organised structure.
- Replying to these suggestions, Mallikarjun Kharge announced that the alliance would hold meetings every two months, and that the next meeting would be held in Hyderabad in August.
24 Indian Sailors Rescued After Ship Comes Under U.S. Attack
- Twenty-four Indian sailors working on the tanker Marivex, a ship that had been sanctioned by the United States because of its links with Iran, were rescued near the south-eastern coast of Oman on Monday after the ship was hit by a U.S. missile strike.
- The sailors sent emergency messages to Manoj Yadav, General Secretary of the Forward Seamen’s Union of India (FSUI), saying that the U.S. Navy had attacked the ship’s engine room.
- Audio messages received by Mr. Yadav at 2 p.m. (India time) from the crew said: “This is Motor Tanker Marivex. Fire on board. Vessel is sinking. U.S. Navy attacked with missile our engine room. We have a hole at the bottom.”
- In a statement, U.S. Central Command (Centcom) said that U.S. forces had disabled the empty oil tanker in the Gulf of Oman on June 8 because it had violated the blockade against Iran by trying to sail to an Iranian port.
- Centcom said that an F/A-18 Super Hornet aircraft from USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN 72) fired a precision-guided weapon at the ship’s engineering and steering sections after the crew failed to follow instructions given by U.S. forces.
- According to Centcom, this action ensured that Marivex could no longer continue its journey to Iran.
- The crew’s distress messages said that a U.S. warship was nearby but was not helping them. They also said that there was no immediate response from the Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre.
- Video clips sent to Mr. Yadav showed a sailor pointing towards a warship located near the tanker.
- The audio messages also said that the lifeboats on one side of the ship had been damaged during the attack, while the lifeboats on the other side could not be reached because a fire had broken out on board.
- A rescue operation was later carried out. All 24 Indian sailors, who had moved to the front part of the ship because the rear section was on fire, were rescued by helicopter.
- Yadav said that all the rescued sailors were safe and had been taken to Masirah Island in Oman.
- He added that the sailors were deeply shocked by the incident and that most of them had lost their mobile phones during the attack.
- According to Mr. Yadav, the sailors are expected to return to India within two days.
- A statement issued by the Centre said that a fire incident on board MT Marivex was reported at around 1:30 p.m. off the coast of Oman.
- Earlier, during a media briefing, Opesh Kumar Sharma, Director in the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, refused to comment on what caused the fire.
- Sharma said that there were 24 Indian sailors on board the vessel and that all of them were safe.
- He also said that the tanker was empty and was located away from the Strait of Hormuz.
- According to the shipping database Equasis, Marivex was placed under U.S. sanctions in December last year.
- Yadav said that Marivex was one of the few ships that left the Strait of Hormuz on April 9 when the ceasefire was announced.
- During that trip, the tanker carried crude oil from Bandar Abbas in Iran to Mangalore in India.
- Yadav further said that Marivex had been operating in a “conflict zone”.
