Extreme heatwaves across the country

• As per the World Meteorological Organization,the year 2023 was the hottest year with rising global temperature to 1.45°C higher than pre industrial level. This year could also be the same.
• The rising trend of global emissions could be a serious problem for climate change.
• More dangerous heat waves are predicted in the upcoming days.
• The situation gets worse in the urban areas. In those areas the Urban Heat Island phenomenon has occurred in which due to the setting of urban infrastructure the temperature can be more by several degrees than the surrounding rural areas and the nights are getting hotter.
• Concrete structures in the urban areas trap heat for a long time along with the air pollutants. Scarcity of greenery and heat coming from air conditioners make the UHI more problematic.
• In coastal areas like Chennai, humidity decreases the chances of reducing heat and increases some severe issues such as rise in body temperature, stress, exhaustion and fatal heat stroke.
• Some National, state and district level heat action plans are implemented around the country. The National Disaster Management Authority is also working to reduce the mortality.
• Increasing green cover such as urban forest,large green Parks, lawns,avenues and other trees can reduce the impact of heat waves and make the environment cooler.
• It is advisable to shift towards more energy efficient air conditioners and 5 star air conditioners could reduce the urban temperature.
• Insulated and ventilated buildings can reduce the heat waves impact.
