PM inaugurates ₹6,957 crore elevated corridor project in Kaziranga
- Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday spoke about the recent Bihar Assembly election and Mumbai civic election results, saying that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has become the first choice of people across the country.
- He was speaking after laying the foundation stone for the ₹6,957 crore Kaziranga Elevated Corridor and virtually flagging off two Amrit Bharat trains from Kaliabor in Assam, where elections are due soon. During his speech, he said that the Congress party has lost the trust of the nation.
- The Kaziranga Elevated Corridor is an 86-km-long, four-lane National Highway project. Out of this, 35 km will be an elevated road passing through the Kaziranga National Park.
- According to an official statement, the elevated wildlife corridor will help animals move freely without disturbance. It will reduce conflicts between humans and wildlife, improve road safety, shorten travel time, and lower the number of road accidents.
- The Prime Minister praised the Assam government led by Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma for stopping rhinoceros poaching in Kaziranga. He called Kaziranga the “soul of Assam” and a “priceless jewel of the country”.
- Modi accused the Congress of ignoring Kaziranga when it was in power. He said the party did not take proper care of the park or its protection.
- He also alleged that the Congress allowed infiltrators to settle on Assam’s land and helped them encroach on large areas.
- The Prime Minister appreciated the Assam government for taking strong action against infiltration and for clearing forests, as well as important historical and cultural sites, from illegal encroachment.
- Modi said that election results from different States showed a clear national trend. He mentioned Kerala’s capital, Thiruvananthapuram, where the BJP won the Mayor’s post for the first time.
- He said that people today want good governance and development, which is why they are choosing the BJP again and again.
- The Prime Minister added that in recent months, people’s trust and confidence in the BJP have continued to grow.
- Referring to Bihar, he said that even after 20 years, the people supported the BJP and helped it win a record number of seats in the Assembly election.
- He also mentioned that the results of the Maharashtra Municipal Corporation elections were announced two days earlier.
- According to Mr. Modi, for the first time, Mumbai gave the BJP a record mandate.
- He added that people also gave the BJP the chance to serve them in most other cities of Maharashtra.
- The Prime Minister said these election results showed that voters were repeatedly rejecting what he called the negative politics of the Congress.
- He claimed that the Congress had lost people’s trust because it did not have a clear agenda focused on development.
- Pointing to Mumbai, he said the Congress party, which was founded in the city, had slipped to the fourth or fifth position there.
- He further said that the Congress has weakened badly in Maharashtra, even though it ruled the State for many years in the past.
8 Opposition leaders booked amid intensifying row over Manikarnika Ghat
- On Sunday, a sharp exchange of words took place between the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Opposition parties after several first information reports (FIRs) were registered in Varanasi.
- The FIRs were filed against people accused of spreading AI-generated images and misleading information on social media about the redevelopment work at Manikarnika Ghat.
- Opposition parties strongly criticised the FIRs, calling the action dictatorial. In response, the BJP said there was a planned attempt to spread false information during the government’s redevelopment work.
- The eight people booked include Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Singh, Lok Sabha MP Rajesh Ranjan, also known as Pappu Yadav, and Congress leader Jaswinder Kaur.
- The FIRs were registered under Section 196 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023. This section deals with spreading hatred or tension between different groups through speech, writing, signs, or electronic media. Cases were also filed under Section 298 of the BNS.
- Reacting to the FIR, Sanjay Singh claimed that the redevelopment work at Manikarnika Ghat had caused damage. He alleged that temples were broken and that a statue of Ahilyabai Holkar was damaged, which led to protests by sadhus and others.
- Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath accused the Congress on Saturday of spreading “false propaganda” to damage the image of Kashi. He was responding to claims about the demolition of statues and temples at the ghat and viral videos related to it.
- Assistant Commissioner of Police, Dashaswamedh, Varanasi, Atul Anjan Tripathi said that separate cases were registered based on complaints from Municipal Corporation officials. These complaints were against people accused of spreading fake images and misleading posts on social media about the redevelopment work.
- Commissioner added that cases were filed against several X (formerly Twitter) handles and individuals. Social media was being closely monitored using digital evidence to take action against those spreading rumours.
- It was clarified that the people booked belong to different political parties, including the Congress and the AAP.
- Uttar Pradesh Congress president Ajay Rai said that if the videos were really AI-generated, clear proof should be made public. He called the FIRs an example of a dictatorial mindset.
- Ajay Rai questioned the Chief Minister directly, asking that if the video of the statue was fake, then evidence should be shown. He also asked where the statue had gone and where it was currently kept.
- He alleged that the government was trying to hide the truth by calling the video AI-generated and said that this raised doubts about the government’s intentions.
- Ajay Rai further pointed out that the Chief Minister had visited Varanasi the previous day and was supposed to visit Manikarnika Ghat, but the visit was suddenly cancelled. He questioned whether this was done to stop the truth from coming out.
- Ajay Rai said that the Congress would not tolerate any harm to the faith, culture, and heritage of Kashi and stated that the truth cannot be silenced.
- The BJP accused the Opposition of spreading lies and creating public anger out of political frustration rather than genuine concern for culture.
- Senior BJP leader Pushkar Mishra said that when the government was carrying out sensitive and transparent redevelopment of Kashi’s heritage, the Opposition’s actions showed political desperation and a planned effort to stop development.
- A local Congress leader in Varanasi, Manish Kumar Upadhyay, said that for several years, Kashi’s history, traditions, religious identity, and civilisation were being affected in the name of development. He blamed the local administration and the government for this situation.
- He said this issue needed serious self-reflection by the people of the city.
- Manikarnika Ghat was described as one of the holiest cremation grounds in Hinduism. It is believed to grant moksha, or freedom from the cycle of birth and death, and holds deep cultural and religious importance for devotees across India.
India invited to join Gaza peace panel
- United States President Donald Trump has invited India to join the proposed Board of Peace for Gaza, according to sources in New Delhi.
- S. Ambassador Sergio Gor shared a letter from President Trump on social media. The letter was addressed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and formally invited India to be part of the Board.
- The Board of Peace for Gaza is a group of countries chosen by the United States to help create a governance system for the Gaza Strip. This is part of President Trump’s peace plan, under which Hamas is being pressured to give up control of Gaza.
- Officials said that India has received the invitation, but the government has not yet given any response.
- This development came three days after President Trump announced on social media that the Board of Peace had been formed and that its members would be announced soon.
- President Trump first presented his peace plan for Gaza on September 29, 2025, when he hosted Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at the White House.
- After the plan was announced, Hamas agreed to release all 48 remaining hostages in Gaza. In return, Palestinian prisoners held in Israeli jails and detainees from Gaza were to be released.
- According to the plan, Gaza will be governed by a temporary transitional system led by a technocratic and non-political Palestinian committee.
- This committee will include Palestinian and international experts and will act as a temporary governing body for Gaza.
- The Board of Peace, led by President Trump, will supervise this transitional government. The Board will also include other world leaders and former U.K. Prime Minister Tony Blair.
- The Board is expected to manage funding for the redevelopment of Gaza until the Palestinian Authority completes a planned reform programme.
- The United States also plans to work with international partners to set up a temporary International Stabilisation Force (ISF), which may be deployed in Gaza soon.
- The U.S. has held talks with several countries about sending troops to take part in the ISF.
- Indian officials have clearly said that India will not be part of the ISF because it is not a United Nations peacekeeping mission.
- However, on October 9, 2025, Prime Minister Narendra Modi welcomed President Trump’s peace plan in a post on X.
- In his post, Mr. Modi said that India welcomed the agreement on the first phase of the peace plan and described it as a sign of strong leadership by Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu.
- Jordan, Greece, Cyprus, and Pakistan also announced on Sunday that they had received invitations to join the Board of Peace for Gaza.
